  1. <p>Doh! I just bought 3 of those lenses from B&H a week and half ago!</p>
  2. <p>Does the AF illuminator on the SB-800 itself work if I use a SC-17 cable?</p>
  3. <p>I just picked up a couple of used SB-800 flashes on ebay. I notice there are two copper electric contacts on the bottom of the flash, under the external power socket and just in front of the standard flash foot. These contacts touch nothing on the camera and I can find no flash accessories which seem to engage these contacts. What are they for? </p>
  4. I haven't used my F-100 in 10 years, so I am speaking from slightly hazy memory. SB-24 was released around 1988, and was the last high end flash Nikon made before Nikon rolled out their at the time highly regarded d-TTL system in 1992, which used lense with special focal distance encoding chip (D chip) to transmits the focal distance of the lens to the camera to allow the TTL flash control to improve it's estimate of the right amount of flash output. F100 was released around 1999 and supported the full d-TTL. But it will also support standard TTL when you use lenses without the D chip or flashes that were released before the introduction of d-TTL. So F100 will work with SB-24 and any lens in the normal TTL mode. but F-100 won't work with SB-24 in the d-TTL mode. D-TTL is only available when you mount a distance encoded lenses (AF-D, AF-S, DX, and G lenses) on the F-100 along with any of SB-25, 26, 27, 28, 28Dx, 50DX, 600 and 800. But not the SB-24.
  5. <p>I am planning a vacation that involves some multi-day hikes and climbs. While hiking I will likely store some heavier AF-S lenses, such as 70-200 f/2.8, in the trunk of the car. The lens will be insured against theft. But would the temperature in the trunk of a car parked in CA sun become a problem for the lens?<br> </p>

    Dominant cloud!

I think the picture would improve if you cropped the top, about 1/3 of the way between the top of the picture and top of the illuminated cloud.
  7. I think the way the sun and trees on the left bisect the picture crowds the wide open expanse of the clouds and water on the right side. I think the picture would be more evocative if you moved the sun and the edge of the tree about 1/3 of the way to the left of the picture, and give some room to the open expense on the right.
  8. I have a 10 year old 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-s VR lens. It was rarely used during this time because I took a sabbatical from photography and and only used it during 2-3 family trips over this period. It is well cared for, and looks new. But when I got back into photography I noticed the VR function no longer seem to contribute very much to steadying the lens in hand held shots. When I half press the shutter, the lens still makes a small audible click, and then makes a very quite humming noise, like both this lens and other VR lenses I had always did when VR engages. But I notice the view finder image seen through the 24-120 no longer clearly stabilize as those of other VR lenses do when VR function engages. Instead it seem to stabilize a little, and then begin to makes continuous, Small, but perceptible jerking movements. It seems VR is malfunctioning. This seems borne out by my test shots. Hand held shots I made at 120mm and 1/8 or 1/16 seconds with VR off is now usually sharper than with VR on. If anything VR now seems to be hurting rather than helping. Has anyone ever had VR functionality in older lens just die for no appearent reason? I also have a 8 year old 70-30 f/4-5.6 AF-s VR. IT was also rarely used. But 6 years ago, the VR also appear to malfunction, but in a different way. When one half press the shutter to engage VR, VR clicks and makes audible rolling noise. But through the finder it is seems VR was only compensating for panning movements, not pitching movements of the lens. This is verified when I turn the camera to portrait orientation. Turning the camera 90 degrees shows the VR now works in pitch but not yaw. At the time I didn't have time to deal with the issue by sending the lens back for repair. Then 6 years went by and I took the lens out again. I notice to my pleasant surprise that VR now seem to work in both axis again. Has anyone every have that happen, where VR functionality seems unreliable, fails for no discernible reason and then sometimes restore itself for no appearent reason?
  9. Thanks for the recommendation for PS light room. I have a few questions regarding its capabilities: 1. Can LR allow me the define the precise areas in an image to dodge, burn, change color balance, etc? 2. Can I stack multiple images on top of each other to create a single image with extend the dynamic range? 3. Can I manipulate a raw image and save it back in the same format? 4. Does it allow me to apply in effect a graduated filter on an existing image, where areas that's been adjusted grades smoothly into the area that hasn't? 5. Can I composite several images together? Thanks in advance.
  10. ES-1 slide copy attachment sounds like an excellent idea. I have a 60mm f/2.8 AFD macro with a 62 mm filter thread. The ES-1 appears to be designed for the 55mm f/2.8 macro with a 52mm filter thread. Is there any sort of step down adaptor from 62 a 52mm?
  11. <p>Thanks, Everyone<br> What are some of the limitations of PS Light room 6? Can it stack pictures to enhance dynamic range? Does it allow me to manipulate the picture by layers or by pixels?</p>
  12. <p>I've taken a 10 year break from photography. Now that I am returning to it, I like to convert parts of the slide collection I took 10+ years ago to digital. I had an old Canon film scanner from 10 years ago which does not have the appropriate interface with my computer. In any case the results it could obtain were mediocre at best.<br> What sort of options do I have now if I want to digitize a significant number of slides?</p>
  13. No, it's not on live view. Haven't found anything in the menus about what is graying out multiple exposures and time lapse. Menu say HDR is not available using RAW, but setting the camera to record in JPEG didn't do the trick. Also, it is disappoint HDR can' be used with RAW.
  14. In the D810's shooting menu, HDR, multiple exposure and time laps photography menu items are grayed out and can't be selected. Is there some setting which needs to be enabled to make those menu options available?
  15. <p>Are focus screen with grid available for either D750 or D810?</p>
  16. I shot mostly film up to about 10 years ago, and then took a hiatus. Now I am getting back into photography, digital this time. What would be a good starting photo editing, retouching software with room to grow? I use a Mac. Is the Adobe Photoshop elements given away at discount with purchases at B&H a good start?
  17. Last time I dabbled in digital photography Nikon D70 was all the rage. Now I am looking at a D810, and would like to know what range of functionality is supported by adding Wifi? Does the camera function as a wifi hot spot, or does it mean the camera can get onto the same network as an external hotspot? Is it possible to say, down load pictures just taken to an iPad while out in the middle of nowhere? Can the iPad receive live view image from the camera and act as a remote?

    B&H shipping

Thanks, everyone., I just joined UPS my choice. Henry, sorry, I got burned out 10 years ago, was spending too much time on the hobby, decided to take a break from it, then I got married, moved to a different city and then a different state, and pretty soon it's 10 years. State of the art of how the hobby works seem to have passed me by. :) But I am back. :)

    B&H shipping

I have not ordered from B&H in about 10 years. What shipping service does B&H normally use? Would they leave the shipment at the door? Or can they hold for pickup? I currently live in a rented townhouse in Virginia. There is no porch. It rains here every other afternoon, I like to make sure my shipment won't get let at the front door or garage door, as amazon shipments frequently are, and become water damaged.

    Nikon wide zooms

<p>I am debating between 3 wide angle zooms for D810 after a 10 year break from photography. On used market the 2 2.8 zooms appear relatively similarly priced to the new f/4 zoom. I am primarily concerned with image quality. The choices are 17-35f/2.8 (Had it 10 years ago, it was great, but maybe the general standard of "great" has progressed beyond it in the 10 years), 16-35f/4 VR (I suspect I won't be using VR on this lens all that often), and 14-24f/2.8. (Does that lens take any filter?)<br /> Does anyone have any opinions or recommendations?<br /> Thanks</p>
  21. I am looking to get back into photography after 10+ years. I am looking to buy a Nikon D810 and a set of fast zooms. When last I shopped for equipment B&H had a sterling reputation. Now I see some highly negative reviews of B&H. Is B&H still a good online seller? Is purchases online through B&H still tax exempt? Thanks.
