I also have lived and worked in Singapore for many years. You will get used to the heat and humidity; I did. I ran three marathons while I was there!
Only worry is lens fungus, and if you go to a reputable dealer, they will let you know what you have. Most Leica users in Sg keep their gear in cabinets. I also second the nomination of going to Ron's Camera at the Adelphi. He is still there, and is honest and good to deal with.
You can also get a CLA done in Sg now, so buy accordinly.
Enjoy the food!

no matter how many rolls you put through, you will still have some that have the flaw, film touching, or something else, warm water, who knows what. but if you can get 90% right, you are on the right track. looks good to me. cheers, P N

a good post, if for no other reason that it caused us all to think a bit; perhaps even wax a bit philosophical.

I just can't get over how much wonderful advice and information is available on this thread. The only thing I was going to add was that if you are not developing your own film at this point, get hold of some Ilford XP2 B&W film, which can be developed via C41 at any local shop. At least, that gets you shooting, and when your skills improve, you will want to get into your own film development. Developing your own film is when you really start to be a photographer.

I have had several 50mm lens, from a '62 Lux to my current 50/2 Cron, next to latest version. This lens was built in '94, in Solms, and is a fabulous lens. It will cost half what your pay for a 50/1.4. If you really need the extra stops, buy yourself a small table-top tripod.
My 50Cron has the focus tab, and it always stays on my M6 B&W body.
-
If you want to use a rectangular hood on your 50 Cron, use the one from the 35 Cron. It fits and it works as long are you are careful to line it up properly. That assumes that you have a 35 Cron, a real little beauty. I usually keep the 35/2 for my chrome and the 50/2 on my B&W film body. PN

Why the interest? What to do when it is pissing down rain and cold as hell. Sit and clean and play with my gear.
Thanks for the page with the differences. I'm not sure the older one was made in Wetzlar, as it was made in 1989, not 88. Also, I have never seen one with Leica GMBH Germany engraved on the back of the top plate. It does have the embossed "made in Germany" on the side of the back door.
cheers, PN

I just returned from Greece. I took a 6 with a 35/2, 50/2 and 90/2.8 and a little tripod. I also took my Gossen Sixtomat. More than enough. Also, take you film with you.

I have two M6 bodies; I use one for b+w film and the other for chrome. On the
back of my 1772xxx the engraving says "Leica GMBH Germany", and on the back of
the 2184xxx it says "Leica Camera"
"Made in Germany"
Wouldn't they both have been made by a GMBH company? Just curious on a very
cold and rainy day.
Thanks,

I'm thinking about picking up a hood for the lens too, as it doesn't come with a hood unfortunately. Any views on the Heliopan rubber hood?

Raymond: Just the tab is black.
Mike S: Yes it does look like the one in your link.

For those of you that may get confused with my question, "any truth to this" I of course mean is the lens really a collector's item, or "panda" as I was told.
(sometimes you ask a question and get savaged!)

I've been using an old 1962 50/1.4 Lux for decades, and decided to upgrade to a
newer lens. Managed to purchase a 1992 Cron, 50/2 in chrome, complete with a
black focus lever, "Lens made in Germany". It is mint condition.
I only wanted the lens for use between my 35 and my 90, when I rummage about
with just my M6. I'm into B&W, process and develop my own.
Then I was told that the lens is a "Panda" lens, and since it was made in
Germany, in "Silber", and has the black focus ring. I'm told it was a
collector's item.
Any truth to all this?
Cheers from Oz.

Thanks for the great pix. I also use M6/TriX etc, and am interested in a D3. Is there any way to know which pix are with the D3, and which are M6? P Nelson

Well, I'm not doing anything fancy, just buildng a road about 6km
north of Mt Barker. But I took a set of photos to document the
works, you know, culverts, road cuts and the like. And everyone
said, how do you get such great detail, great photographs. I used
FP4+, and developed and printed the film my self. But the Leica lens
I used was the 35/2 (last model, not the asph) and an old 90 TE.
What more can I say. I noticed about 30 years ago, that there was
someting special. So do others looking at the prints.

Well done mate! I have reflected on the effect on us out here in the
Australian Bush. In fact, the whole world has been affected. What I
like about the American diplomacy is that the Americans have adopted
the Wilsonian Doctrine. In other words, Ethics, Liberty, Equality,
and Democracy do matter. Don't get me wrong, at times the Septics
are hypocrats. But generally, Americans stand up for and are at the
leading edge for those things that will improve civility in this
world. I only have one thing to say to my Yank friends.....Lets Roll!

don't look back, ever! learn to love what you have, not what you
wish for, or wonder about. if you get good gear, or a good wife, or a
good drink, learn to enjoy it. don't wonder if you made the right
choice. do your own thing. happiness is inside you, not outside.

Streuth, it doesn't pay to write anything in anymore, and it's almost
starting to pay not to read either, what with everyone getting off
the track. Where did al these pissed off blokes come from? Next time
Mark, just give us an email. Anyway, it'l be a long time before the
7's hit Oz.

I get my filters from Robert White in the UK. They have a website,
and sell Heliopan filters. Great service, good price, best product
money can buy. PN

I was in a shop today purchasing some chemical, and see that Tetenal has an E-6 package for use with the Chromes. I would use it with Velvia and Provia. I just wonder what others think aout this product, as I am mainly a B&W developer, and am now thinking about getting into Slides. I wonder how difficult it is to use, how fussy about temp. and of course mix. Not that I am a lousy technician, but simplicity is always , how can I say it, Elegant. Thanks for your help, and cheers, PN

Try a wetting agent like Tetanal, just a few drops at the end of the
wash.

Philip Greenspun has notified me that the demise of Greenspun.Com is
immanent. I do not have a shut down date at this time. Philip has
suggested that I contact Photo.Net and have all our accounts and
archives transferred there. I have sent Photo.Net a letter requesting
just that and will post further information as I receive it.
Apparently, this has to do with the implosion of Philip's company,
ArsDigita, after being taken over by a bunch of venture capitalists
who don't know shit about software. See
http://www.waxy.org/random/arsdigita/.
