  1. That looks reasonable. I have a Canon DF2400 and scanning negs and trannies look soft and horrible using their carrier. I think the first company to come out with a dedicated film scanner that does MF for less than a grand is going to make a mint.
  2. Interesting. It's a shame that the thought is that many are not useful. If you are looking to buy a particular camera or lens, for instance, they are very useful, as you can see the actual output of said camera, regardless of how good the picture is.

Since all the pictures are actually up, maybe the answer is to sacrifice the indexing -- i.e. all the fields of info must be stored somewhere, like the title, equipment, ratings etc. Maybe the search engine could require you specify in what field to look for your search term (equipment, filters whatever) and actually look at the existing database where the info is kept. It would take a lot longer to search, but it would make everything on the site searchable. Perhaps a seperate box could be in the cluster just to run the searches so it doesn't suck CPU time needed for the rest of the site.

It's a shame more than two thirds the site are inaccessible to searching.

  3. Just curious...I originally joined photo.net to add some Minox

examples because I thought there were very few Minox 35mm examples in

the database when you search for "minox" in the gallery search. It's

been months and my images still don't come up in the list. I have the

equipment listed as Minox GT-S. I'm curious what I need to do to

enable access to the gallery database. Thanks.

  4. I think pollutants have a lot to contribute. In high school I lived about 2-3 miles east of O'Hare airport. Sunrises were very pink and sunsets were blood red. Flight activity was highest around late afternoon/early evening as far as I could tell. AFAIK particulate matter adds to the scattering of the larger red photons and increased blocking of blue, so perhaps the pinkness of the sunrise is due to a larger percentage of blue light making it through to our eyes?
  5. The good/verygood/excellent is a great idea. I mentioned once in the GUA forum that only 3 possible ratings would be a goodthing, but this is better. Would also stop people abusing the system both ways, 10s and 1; prevents someone at work who thinks they are doing you a favour getting you in trouble; prevents the destructive raiders from hurting people's feelings in their beginning days when self confidence is hard to come by. I'd also suggest having it possible for the picture to be publicly viewed but open to comments and not ratings as an option.
  6. Just wondering how long it takes to get photos to come up in the

gallery search engine after they've been uploaded. My initial reason

for joining the site was to get a few more Minox photos up, as there

aren't that many on the web, and even less that demonstrate that they

make decent cameras when you hit the focus right. But when I search

for minox I still get the same results as I did when I joined. Just

curious. Or am I doing something wrong when uploading?

  7. Use Mozilla, you can block images from adservers by right clicking on a banner. I didn't get a single popup or pop under as I must have blocked those sites already.

That said I wouldn't touch webspace that did that with anyone's barge pole.

There are loads of ISPs which offer free dialup accounts (at least there are here in the UK). Most have webspace attached. There are other options as well.

Here's a free ISP in the States, I think it's available to Canadians as well, they offer 20mb free webspace. You can use the email and webspace without using the dialup -- there are only access numbers in the Washington state area and in NY. (I have a free account in the UK I use for free webspace and email only -- and just use our adsl for connectivity).
