Thanks guys. Thomas, thanks especially to you for the detailed explanation.

Anyhow, if you choose save in Camera RAW Database that means that you don't have to keep track of sidecar files or worry about making sure that they get renamed along with the image.....the camera raw database indexes the images by file content rather than name, so if you rename the raw file, the camera raw database will still find the correct settings. The disadvantage of this approach is that if hou move the images onto dirrerent computer, or burn them to a DVD, the edits won't be able to travel with the images.

The part i highlighted in your comment is what i suspected and feared. because i have moved between computers and copied files to dvds, and while copying over the raw files did not give thought, stupidly, on what the heck happened with the raw settings. Is there any way for me to "extract" these settings from the database and move them over to the other computer? Sounds gnarly at this point. sigh. Anyways I would still like to know where this raw database is stored on the computer (on a windows XP system).

Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.

Under windows xp, is this where the raw settings are "cached" for individual images? :
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Cache
There's a ton of files in there, but it doesn't look like there's one per image, looks more like some sort of an internal database of sorts?

I just noticed that while my PS file browser setting says "Keep sidecar files
with the master files", camera raw says "Save image settings in: camera raw
database". The latter overrides the former? I don't know, and hence the
following question.
My question is: where and how are the raw settings for the individual images
stored given the above settings? Since I didn't say "Save image settings in:
sidecar xmp files" instead, does it mean my file browser setting is sort of
useless? I have backed up the raw files but never really understood how the raw
settings are magically remembered, and didn't know what else I should've backed
up in addition. Is this information in the cache? Do I have to back up the
cache everytime, if I'm interested in remembering these settings for the
individual images.
Maybe the "correct" way, going forward, is to save the raw settings in the xmp
files AND to keep these with the master files?
Thanks.

Janet, thanks. that's precisely the link that is "missing" for me. i'm thinking it's probably a member-only feature..
-
Long, long time ago, I used to be able to look at all the commented on photos in
the member workspace page, but I see that the "list" has been limited to just 5.
Is it some sort of a member only privilege, or am I just not looking hard?

no clues where to buy'em. but for those who don't know, he started out as a photog first, including PJ work. here's a small collection of 8 of his shots..

as a sidenote, i've heard that Barry Lyndon was shot almost entirely in natural light (perhaps it's not that uncommon, dunno)..

thumbnails load *very* slowly when you click on the folder name.
this wasn't how it used to be. the browser even times out at times,
before finishing loading all the thumbs in the folder.
