Wow, that link is totally messed up. Nevermind.

Thanks for the great feedback. I haven't printed anything yet, as I've been at this
digital thing for about a week, so I hadn't considered the difference between monitor
display and print. That's a really good point, that I hadn't considered.
The choices I often make in framing and subject matter mean that my histograms
may be always look lopsided.
-
I shoot RAW and edit in Elements 3.0.
When I import a RAW file and adjust the exposure, brightness, contrast,
shadows, to my liking, the histogram ends up representing a "poor" exposure.
The histogram is not a bell-shaped curve and often is bunched to one side of the
spectrum.
Maybe I have my own eye and my own idea for what I want my pictures to look like. I
like high contrast and dark shadows. When I adjust, I look at the picture and use my
eye, basically ignoring the histogram.
So if I like the way it looks, should I worry that the histogram is "wrong?" Is there a
"right" exposure?
Thanks

I once read that keeping your nikon boxes will increase resale value if you decide to
sell the equipment. Is this true?

I have a D70. How do I format using the computer?
I transfer my RAW files directly to PS Elements 3.0. I don't use Capture or the Nikon
software that came with the camera.

I just bought a DSLR. I miss my 24/2.8 AI horribly. Alas, a 14/2.8 is just too darn
expensive. Mark me down as a WA person.
-
That's exactly what I did.
Thanks

I just switched to digital.
I went out shooting this weekend, came home, and copied my RAW files to my
computer's hard-drive using a card reader.
How should I delete the files from the CF card? Should I use the camera or the
computer, and how should I do it? Does it even matter?
Thanks

For example, take a look at this box I found through yahoo shopping.
Granted, I'm sure this product is not anywhere on the level of Pelican or a quality
aluminum box, but look at the price! $12.99. Add some foaming in and you've got a
$25 storage box.

I was shopping for some kind of storage box for my photo gear, and the options
available in the camera store seemed kind of expensive.
I felt like I could get the same level of protection and convenience in a product that
isn't specifically marketed to photographers, for a lot less money.
Am I imaging this?

So Capture does not come with the camera? Can it be downloaded?
I plan to use iPhoto for organzing and displaying.
Now I understand the term "workflow."
-
That's exactly what I'm hoping to do.

I will shoot raw with my soon to arrive D70. I have Photoshop
Elements 3.0 on my computer. I can just use Elements to process the
raw files, right? So is there any reason to use the Nikon software
that comes with the D70?
This is all so confusing.
Thanks

Sorry this is a bit off topic.
I live in Japan and am shopping for a new D70 or 20D. Yodobashi's prices are
outrageous. B&H and Adorama quote prices that are hundreds of dollars cheaper.
So I'm ordering from them.
A few years ago, I bought an FM3A and several lens, and the prices were comparable
with stores in the U.S. Is this a digital thing? Or is it due to the exchange rate (which
has changed considerably since then)?
I'm perplexed. Of course, I would much rather just go to Yodobashi Shinjuku, which
is only about 20 minutes from my house.
Any thoughts?

I seem to have gathered that wide-angle filters are thinner, but is this necessary?
-
Quick question:
Do I need a "wide-angle" UV filter for this lens or can I just go with the regular filter?
What makes a filter "wide-angle?"

Well I went to the camera store and spend a good half hour playing with the two
cameras. It really is a matter of personal preference, and I appreciate all the people
who emphasized the importance of the feel of the camera. I've decided on the 20D.
The ergonomics of the D70 were impressive, but I preferred the 20D's control layout
and the viewfinder (which is important to me).
Thanks!

Wow, thanks for all the feedback.
I will check out the Adorama bag. Crumpler and Domke both seem good as well. And maybe I'll try and put something together myself (if I'm feeling motivated).
Quite a few people completely misread my original post. I specifically said that safety was not my reason for wanting a camera bag that doesn't look like a camera bag. I made that pretty clear. It's a design thing, which may seem kind of silly for many posters, but is entirely different than trying to conceal a camera system in a diaper bag.

Thanks Mark.
One thing I forgot to mention. I'm living in Japan now, and I'm probably returning to
the U.S. next year for about a year. Then I may go abroad again or stay in the States.
I've seen people mention that Canon has an 'international warranty' that is honored in
any country, while Nikon has a country specific warranty. Am I getting this right?
Please set me straight if not.
This isn't a major factor, but something else floating around in my mind.

And I am planning on keeping the FM3A (I never want to part with that camera). The
D70 kit lens won't work with the FM3A, and the AI lenses won't work on the D70. So
lens swapping is limited to the 50/1.8. Though it's possible I'll buy some non-DX AF
lens in the future that could work on the FM3A and D70.
I keep going around in circles...
-
Thank you for your input. I guess I'm still leaning to the D70, because it just seems
like a more rational choice.
I'm interested to hear more opinions.
-
I've heard of doing this, and it's definitely an option. But I don't really want to make a
project of it and stitch things in, etc.
So I'm interested in products actually designed to carry a small SLR system, but don't
look like a Lowepro or whatever.
Thanks

I'm getting a new DSLR for a Christmas / birthday present - lucky me! I am trying to
decide between the D70 and 20D. I have a FM3A body, two AI lenses, and the AF 50/
1.8, so I am already a Nikon person. However, the 50/1.8 is the only lens that works
with the D70, if I want to use the camera meter, so I don't really have much invested
in lenses from that perspective.
I am an 'advanced-amateur' or whatever it's called. I'll only ever print 10x12 or
smaller, and only for myself and friends or family.
The kit lens for the D70 is a great deal and a good all-purpose lens, while the 20D kit
lens seems merely adequate.
The D70 is cheaper.
So is there any reason I should opt for the 20D? The difference between the 8mp vs.
6mp bothers me, even though it surely makes no difference for the kind of work I do.
There's this little voice that keeps saying, "8 megapixels, 8 megapixels, get the
Canon, get the Canon..." Help me get over this stupid megapixel hang-up!
-
I'm about to get a new DSLR, and I need a bag for it. I'm looking
for something that doesn't look like a camera bag, but is a camera
bag in terms of having convience, protection, and partitions. It's
not a safety thing really. I just don't like the design of most
camera bags. Domke seems promising.
Oh, and under US$100 please.
Your suggestions are appreciated.
camera bag that doesn't hurt neck/shoulders?
