1.
Greetings all, been a while since I posted last....
Recently picked up a mint Canon D60 (yes the early DSLR pre-x0D), with only 1000 actuations on it.
I bought it at a steal of a price ($199) and mated it with the EF lenses I have for my Eos 10s (film) that I got back in 2001.
Looking to make sure I am covered in my kit for any eventuality.
Currently, the lens collection I have includes:
Sigma 28prime.
Canon Mk II 50/1.8.
Canon 35-80
Canon 75-300 III/USM (non-IS)
I also bought the Battery Grip for the D60 ($50).
My Speedlite 540EZ won't work with the D60, so I will be looking for some alternative E-TTL flash. Suggestions welcome.
Tripod: I think its a Slik. Haven't used it in a while...
Budget: SMALL. As you can see I am doing everything on a budget.
Yes I am about 8 years behind the curve. Life gets in the way. I am still learning to do more than Point and Shoot (I do have a Canon A560 for that task). The film way is an expensive way to learn so I went the DSLR route so I can figure out all the bells and whistles and what it takes to get a good picture with this type of camera. I don't want to be an Ansel Adams, just a competent amateur. When I reach that point, I'll invest in a better camera and better glass. Until then...

  2. During a recent trip to Asia, I took my Canon 10s body (big and heavy too), a Canon 75-300 zoom, Canon 35-80 zoom and Sigma 24 prime.

Now I know they aren't all 'pro-level' lenses, but I got a series of very nice and clean shots with this range. Bring some decent film also. If you are a hobbyist let me suggest the Kodak ISO 400 High Def film that has similar grain levels to the Kodak ISO 100 films. Very clean and vibrant colors.

  3. If you call Canon USA they will send you a new manual for the camera (likely a photocopy) for the low price of ~US$7.00. This price includes the cost of shipping/mailing it to you. Takes about 5-10 business days.

I did this for an Eos 10s (roughly same era as your camera).

  4. I was told by camera store owners that the new procedures that the

security screeners use to x-ray bags exposes film to alot more

radiation and thus tends to fog films. I use standard KodakMax 400,

and B/W 400CN (i think thats the brand).

Are the x-ray bags (US$9.00) any good?

Does x-ray screening nowadays fog film still??

As an additional comment, I do alot of world travel including China,

Malaysia, and countries where the x-ray technology has a better

    chance of being older...

  5. Hi Michael,

I own a 10s and I just bought a used Canon Speedlite 540ez for US$125. Flash works fantastically, and it roughly of the same era as the camera.

Check Ebay, Craiglist (look at San Francisco for the most camera stuff), and the Classifieds section here (where I got my flash from).

    Cheers,

    Dan Magnusson

  6. Call Canon 1-800-828-4040. Or look at the Canon Accessory Annex online.

For US$7.53 they will sell you a copy or if available, an original of the manual.

I did this with a Eos 10s and a Speedlite 540ez. (Same era as the 1N).

    Cheers,

    Dan

  7. Hi Fish,

Yes the 10s is still worth getting. I just purchased one used about a month ago, and am taking some great photos with it. I have 3 lenses to go with it and am in the midst of buying a 540ez flash. For the camera + Sigma 24 prime+ Canon 35-80 (yes a cheap kit lens) I paid 125 US$. For the flash I paid $125.

Remember, its not the camera body, but the lenses that you put on it that give you the good pics. I got the 10s because it has many interesting features that you cannot find unless you go to a much higher end camera.(Ie. EOS 3 or better).

    Good luck and happy shooting.

    Dan

  8. I have a Canon EOS 10s and I have the opportunity to buy either a

100-300 mm EF 5.6L or a Flash unit for my camera.

    I have a 24 prime, and a 35-80 zoom already.

Here is part of my consideration:

In the new year, I will be travelling to China (sp. Shanghai,

Nanjing, and Hong Kong) around Chinese new year. I will most likely

be there during the celebrations and I'll want to be taking photos

of it. Will I do better with the lens or the flash, based on my

    current setup???

    Thanks for help!
