Truely excellent composition. Greater cloud detail in the sky may have added to this shot but I'm not sure because it is so good as it is. It really gives a sense of isolation!
  1. I like colour photos and tend to shy away from B & W, however this photo has something about it which draws my eye to it! I think it is the heavy contrast between the clouds, sky and ground. I don't really notice the red tint on my monitor and I'd be interested to see it in pure black & white - would the contrasts be greater? The bushes in the foreground merge into the photo a bit too much so don't add much to the shot, so could the cropping be moved up to draw the eye more to the wooden frame structure in the middle (move it down to bottom third)?I don't know why no one else has commented upon it either!

Great photo with surreal colours! The focus seems a little bit too near the foreground of the shot, but considering the circumstances I think we could forgive you for that :-)
  2. Agree with Amanda that a little more depth of field towards the back of the frog would have been nice, however I also think that the blurred leaves in the foreground add to the shot.

    Three questions.
    1. How did you get the frog to stay still for 10 seconds?
    2. Was this the only shot you managed to get?
    3. How large is the frog in real life?
    Great photo.

In my opinion you have the cropping spot on. If the back petal had stayed in focus then I think the image would have jumped out even more.I would personally love to take photos like this. What sort of lighting did you use - it is very subtle - and how did you ensure the background was so black?Steve Coburn

I'm a little surprised that you have put this image up for critique when it has to be the weakest one in your cats' folder. Your photos of the cats are great, they are full of life and show the animals being, well just cats!I think the reason I don't like this is it just seems a little unnatural, the shot seems to be too tightly cropped. If it was extended to the right you would have the ear showing and the eye would have been moved away from the centre to a third of the way in!I'm off to comment on one of the pictures I do like in your cats' folder now ...Steve Coburn

These images are all strange, but I do like them! Was there bright sunlight to the right because I'm curious how you got the clouds to look like that. (I've read your general explanation but I'm wondering about lighting).

Is that building actually in the lake? I would like to see the image cropped around the building and then have the building enlarged because I just want to see more of it, and at that size it is just frustrating! Maybe shifting the horizon up a little so that there is a little less sky might help the composition as well?

  3. I think that it would be interesting to see the same shot during twilight or with a longer exposure to bring out a little more detail of the buildings and the river.

Was this scanned from a negative or a print? I know from experience that in night photos there could be some detail in the negative which the processor fails to bring out during printing. I just wonder what is in those shadows?
