If cost is no object buy an MP. It is newer and has a better non flare rangefinder. From a pure use standpoint both are a joy to use and there is really very little difference. I personally like the covering better on the M6 over the MP and the faster rewind of the M6.

Never noticed the light dropout as you mention nor do I see it in the pics above.

There are a lot of people everywhere, not just on the street, without anybody.

I too think the golden age of photography has come and gone, where folks have images they made and kept with gear they kept. Now images are mostly never printed just lost eventually and the cameras are just thrown away as they are sold incidentally to computers or cell phones.

I am looking at the Gitzo tabletop carbon fiber. Its small and it will travel with me. The biggest thing I have found with quality tripods is to find one with leg locks you like. While the Gitzos are great and light they may not open as fast as a Manfretto with lever locks and the legs drop. Speed of setup is often a concern. Test this out before you buy. Any tripod 300USD should be steady for a Leica. Speed of setup and weight are the concerns.

You need to oil and adjust the shutter mechanism which is work for an expert. DAG is highly recommended here.

The camera will work very well where quiet, unobtrusive, lowlight type work is done, as it always has.

That should be 39mm. Sorry.

#25 in 46mm from B&W or Heliopan are good choices.

Ah yes, 2000 was the year, I believe 500 of each were made, which in the scheme of things is limited as to the world. But you should also know several of these lenses made there way to US Dealers who could not give them away at the time and had to discount them heavily.

Seems like folks should have waited to order until early reports were in to avoid all these hassles. Most people use Ms for film and Canon or Nikon for digital anyway, since the M8 is really years late in entering the market.

I have the 50 cron SM, bought on Ebay. Use it all the time, looks brand new. Shame not to use the modern lens on the IIIg. I had the 35 but to me it was just too big on the IIIg, so I sold it.

Prices vary for lots of reasons. As said, unless film is totally discontinued, there will be a demand for film based Leicas.

Perhaps the charger looks large due to the smaller camera size than an DSLR. But in any case all digital cameras seem to come supplied with one battery and charger.

Economies of scale. Leica has a smaller total number of units that will be sold based upon their limited purchaser base and physical capacity to produce units. Thus, the entire cost of R&D, overhead, administration, cost of goods and production and advertising must be spread over a smaller number of units resulting in a higher unit price. Frankly, I am pleased they came in at $4800 and not $7995, so that more people can step up and buy one. Really, whatever price will sell the entire production and ensure reasonable profitablity is the bottom line.

It would make sense to me, going forward, for Leica to get into film
production or marketing arena, mainly Black and White emulsions to be marketed
under the Leica name. It seems Rollei has done this in some fashion as some
medium format film is sold as "Rollei." This might make the availability of
film easier by being closely connected to Leica film based camera. If "Leica"
35mm films were available, people might stop debating the future of film's
total demise and realize it will be there for those who want to use it.

I am presently inclined to use my Nikon D80 for the few digital pictures I take and use the Ms for film.

If you need digital buy Canon, if you want an M in digital, buy the M8. Its really not that tough to figure out. You will not get Canon quality and features in a small rangefinder setup ( as Mr. Puts so clearly stated). End of story.
-
Go with a IIIg over the earlier models. Age is a factor as is the old shutter speeds. Not nearly as convenient as an M but with an Elmar 50 a IIIg makes a very portable outfit. The 35 ASPH is big and heavy on the camera and needs a separate viewfinder. I sold mine. I found the modern cron in the LTM, part of the same manufacture, and it combines both worlds.

Any independent flash with automatic will do here. I have the 383 super which has a swivel feature. The small Metz, the peanut, is great but no swivel feature. Beware of some of the dedicated flashes, Nikon, Canon, etc. as the wiring may not work on the M6. This is one area where a $30 flash will do just fine, you do not need to spend a lot of money.

All the dealers are taking orders. The question is can they fill them.

I try to ignore the polically correct but sometimes its so hard. I do not see a racist slur here. Mr. Hu says he sad and people all over the world say boo hoo when they are sad or something similarly sounding. Had the poster spelled it Hu or Hoo, Mr. Patel would choose to be offended. Lighten up.

Herbert Keppler is widely known as an excellent photo columist and equipment expert. I could not find any links to photographs he is known for.
