  1. PMK has become my developer of choice for many reasons. PMK isn't really that nasty. Just wear gloves and be careful. My scans have improved cosiderably since I started using PMK. PMK defenitly helps to keep highlights from blowing out with most films.

You may be able to replicate the effect with photoshop, but it's probably not the same, and certainly not as consistent. If I had'nt found pyro then I probably would have gone totally color neg or maybe even digital!

  2. I just got back from Johannnesburg airport yesterday. Very happy to be back in Asia!!!

From our domestic flight out of Johannesburg to Polokwane airport last month, my (sleep deprived)brother had a digital point&shoot in his locked and checked-in backpack stolen. If we were'nt so late for our connection he probably would'nt have checked it in. Guess theft is extremely common there!

  3. Oliver,

I have taken developers in my checked baggage, no problem. But with all the chemistry stores in China, You can find all the chemicals you need to mix up a very wide variety of developers!

  4. When I discovered that the minilab across the street cuts film by wrapping it around their shoulders and pulling it across after each cut, I told them not to cut my negs anymore. So now they return them to me uncut. this has worked fine for my C-41, but I would'nt dare try not developing my own B&W!
  5. Thanks to all who responded!!!

Craig: The muted colors are from my scanning proof colors.

Randall: What are you going to be doing in Sichuan? What part will you be in?

    Cheers,

  6. Hi,

I have to agree with Craig that you can't keep your camera in a bag till you are ready to shoot. Yuo will miss alot of good shots that way! I have lived and travelled in western China (Chengdu, Sichuan) for much of over six years now. If you want any specific advice then please just ask.

  7. Gary,

I have been in China for most of the last six years.

My personal favorite is Sichuan province. To the west of the capital Chengdu are mountains inhabited by Tibetan and Chang minorities. The rest of the Sichuan basin is also very photogenic...and if you like spicy food, it's hard to beat!

Here is a link to some examples of what you can see:

Though not all are from Sichuan.

Email me if you want more advice on Sichuan!

  8. I too have both the Ebony All-wheather focusing cloth with shade clip and their bellows focussing hood. I purchased these both in June 2002 so they must be the most current production. My all-wheather focusing cloth came with quality plastic sections not cardboard. I use it only when it is raining, though!

The rest of the time I use the bellows focusing hood. It is their newer model without a leather bellows, it's some expensive space-age material instead. Actually I was the first customer that bought it! This Bellows focusing hood works quite well, perhaps unlike the flimsier leather bellows hood. But it does have to be removed to use my large schneider loupe.

Maybe their new loupe would work better ith it?

  9. I have been searching for 70mm films-there is very little selection

and it's only available in 100' rolls.

I'd like to find a source for 5m prerolled cassettes.

Anyway with the difficulty of finding this format, I'll ask:

Is 70mm film probably going to be discontinued in the forseeable

    future?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan
