1. Hello Wolf!

The flatness problem is anything but a rumor, especially when the film lasts a little longer in the insert. I've taken two identical shots with a 2.8/45 focussed to infinity, on the tripod with mirror lock up, film type 120. On the second shot you can see a real difference in sharpness but only in the upper central part of the slide (about a third). This is exactly the part of the film which was a long time bended over the guide roller of the insert.

Since that time I'm using the vacuum insert and film type 220 whenever possible. But in my experience the usage of film type 220 instead of 120 is more effective than the usage of type 220 in the vacuum insert vs. type 220 in the standard insert.

  2. *Three* working days for the repair of my Tele-Apotessar 4/350mm by Kyocera/Germany. I've buyed a TLA 360 flash and this lens was the only one where the autozoom reflector doesn't work correctly in combination with. Even though the guarantee has run out it was repaired for free. Those days are gone forever ...

  3. Hello Anthony,

with a Sonnar 2.8/140 you get the following vield of view in the viewfinder (approx.):

    -with extension tube 13mm, from 45cm x 60cm to 17cm x 23cm

    -with extension tube 26mm, from 22cm x 29cm to 12cm x 16cm

    -with both tubes, (13+26)mm, from 14cm x 19cm to 9cm x 12 cm

  4. Hello all!

Maybe this is more of interest for readers of the medium format forum ...

First, as we all know it's impossible to stop down the diaphragm of the Contax 645 lenses manually. An adaptor only makes sense on long telephoto lenses wide open. I've dismantled a Contax 645 extension tube 26 mm to make me two different kind of adaptors for my Contax 645 system:

The back part (the part which fits on the 645 body) was modified to accept M39 enlarger lenses for macro work and (via additional adaptor) my Luminar 63mm (microscope mount, additional adaptor made by Novoflex).

The front part (the part which fits on the 645 lens) was modified with the help of a lathe and with a common T2 adaptor for Canon EOS. It's abit difficult to describe all the things I've done but if anybody is interested in I'll post some pictures of my "construction".

  5. "The Canon collar mount for the 100mm macro is not well designed at all. It comes in 2 pieces and they are not easy to put on the lens, the fit and feel is cheap (nothing like the L collars) and I wouldn't recommend it for those reasons alone (never mind the exhorbitant price). I hate it!"

Exactly that's the reason why you should have a look at the collars made by "Rainer Burzynski, special equipment for nature photography". He has a lot of other stuff in his program to work around the design flaws made by many camera and lens manufacturers.

  6. Hello Michael,

I'm also using this lens since several years. Another outstanding feature of this lens is the nearest focussing distance of 1.9m. The 350 Tele-Apotessar is in practice a long focal length macro lens perfect for nature photography.

  7. Hi Michael,

take a piece of double-sided adhesive foil and stick a small semi-ball (hemishere) on the button for the mirror lock-up. What works great are the small eyes for teddy bears where you cut off the hooks at the flat side. I wonder who has designed this impractical button of this great camera ...

  8. Hello Milan,

I've shot several pictures which where definitely out of focus (partially in the upper third of the image) because of film bending so I bought a second magazine with the vacuum insert. Therefore I switched to 220 film. But I can't see any visible (!) difference between a 220 film in the standard magazine and a 220 in the vacuum magazine.

  9. Hello James,

the Novoflex flash system has definitely a special adaptor for TTL light metering with the Contax. You need the generator and the ring flash. The only problem might be the large diameter of your lens front thread (72 mm). I'm using the generator in combination with the FlashArt on my 645. The generator and the flashes are really not made by Novoflex they are a third party product. I'm sure there are some other flashes out there which are using the same generator and adaptors under a different brand.

  10. In former times Gepe builds cutters for 6x7, 6x6, 6x4.5 and 4x4, the latter I have. The problem is the gepe cutters cuts both sides of the slide all at once so it's rather difficult to cut a slide with a different format than the cutter is build for.

  11. Hello Gary,

I've also observed film flatness issues but only when the film remains in the magazine for a couple of days between the shots. Since that time I use film type 220 whenever I can. I own one magazine with standard insert and another one with the vacuum insert. And it does make a difference! But I think the main improvement is the usage of 220 film type vs. 120, a vacuum magazin adds yet another (IMHO) smaller effect.

    Regards
