  1. Hi Tom, thanks for the reply.

"Part of the fun" is probably why I took out a ruler and magnifying glass and said, "Hmmm, looks like about half a

    millimetre" :)

I too am under the impression that it is pinhole size that is the culprit. I'll take a couple more tomorrow (it's miserable out

today and I'd have 1hr exposures!) trying it at .55mm and .6mm.

I think I was expecting something much more contrasty from the positive paper and this image looked so flat I knew

    something needed sorting.

  2. Hey guys, I hope I'm posting this in the right place, if not please let me know. <p>

Well, here are my two very first images produced with my homemade pinhole camera and Harman positive paper. Now, I know these are

not great so I wanted to post them up and get some advice.<p>

From my understanding, these have been overexposed. These are the factors I am assuming can have affected this:<p>

    1) My pinhole size is actually larger than I think it is. (It is approx .5mm which is what I used to calculate my f-stop. Focal length is 120mm

so camera is f240). I might change the estimation to .55mm or .6mm<p>

    2) The darker portrait oriented image used a digital meter in incedent mode. I set an EI of 3 for the paper and used an online chart to

    convert the 1sec f8 it gave me to 15mins 18sec at f240<p>

    3) The lighter lanscape oriented image was metered using an iPhone app and my iPhone as the light meter. This gave me an exposure of

    41 mins!<p>

They were both developed in Ilford PQ at 1:15 for 3 mins at 20degC ( I got this from another post on a forum, not sure who but his pics

were great so seemed worth copying)<p>

Is this simply a case of getting my pinhole size wrong? What would be the best scientific method to getting a decent image out of my

    pinhole camera?<p>

Thanks in advance for any help.<p>

  3. Actually, I sent an email to your helpdesk a couple of weeks ago. I opened my hotmail account to find two emails, one saying that someone had accessed my email address from photo.net with the name (or email address, i dont remember) and a second spam email from that very same person.

  4. Mellisa,

I dont have a 10D but I know that it will have a function to set the white balance. You will have to refer to the manual to find this out. Essentially it means putting the camera in custom white balance mode, filling the frame with white paper in the light you will be shooting and pressing a button to save that as the custome white balance. Then you can shoot away.

Alternatively fire off a shot of a peice of white paper in the required light, setting the auto white balance to tungsten and give the lab that file with the rest of them. Tell them they can colour balance the shots from that file. But, as was pointed out earlier, it is better to get it right in camera as best you can before taking the shot.

  5. I got the opposite feeling, that these guys, who look like taxi drivers some of them, are just along because their mates are going. They do look bored. Its almost as if they know that what they are doing makes no difference and will have no effect. From what I've seen of Brians photos, he great at capturing the emotions in the air - he either missed it this time or it simply wasnt there. Im sure Brian will fill us in on the details, but the number of police there im sure had an effect on the mood of the day.

Im dissapointed to see he hasnt posted my two favourites from his shots though. :)

  6. There are so many images out there, brilliant ones, that make it seem you are there. Mike is one of the few photographers ive seen (granted, thats not alot) that makes me want to be there. I hope that makes some sort of sense.

Many have pointed out what a great photographer Mike is. Id like to point out what a great printer he is too. If only I could print half as well as him!!

Looking forward to being inspired in the next installment.

You may be interested to know that AJ Purdy have the Coolscan V for £469...a good deal less than what you have so far found it for. They also are advertising the coolscan IV for £349, however they had limited stock and I believe they are all sold now. Click <b><a href="http://www.ajpurdy.co.uk/">HERE</a></b> for AJ Purdy.<P><P>

Ive been keeping my eye out for a scanner deal in the UK too. Id be interested to see any prices you may get, particularly on a Coolscan IV or Minolta Scan III.<P><P>

  8. Actually ive been called far worse than loony. And sometimes they have been right. :)

I have emailed Harvey about the matter and hopefully it is now closed. Now you guys can go back to talking economics and US-bashing. :)

PS. Eric, loved watching you play for Utd....and when is your next movie out, its been a long time since "Elizabeth".

  9. I understand where you are coming from Harvey. Unfortunately, the people you see in the photos are not extremists or fanatics. Matam (chest-beating) is an act practiced by all Shi'ites, young and old, male and female (though the practice of using knives and chains is not accepted in some sects, including mine). The family of Imam Hussein sat in lines performing matam after his death.

I know that you are not trying to belittle the religion of Islam as a whole, but your lack of knowledge of the act of matam, something that is a core part of a Shi'ite muslims life, led you to label the people in the photos as fanatics. They aren't.

  10. <i>"BTW, I always knew this festival as Moharram - haven't heard Ashura before. Or maybe I've got them confused?"</i>

    <br><br>

The first month of the Islamic calender is the month of Moharram. The tenth day of Moharram (Ashara means ten in Arabic) is the day of martyrdom of Imam Hussein. A lot of people interchange the two; talking about events of Moharram only ever refer to this event.

    <br><br>

To the ignorants who have posted to this thread: we loonies have thick skin and, it seems, a more balanced view of the world. Sure, there are extremists and they generally get all the popular press but some of us live our lives peacefully and in harmony with our neighbours treating them with the respect that they deserve for the actions that that they themselves take, not those of a minority who belive they represent everyone.
