Emil, I was seeing your portfolio, and thought the big influence that Joel has in your work, and then, you just mentioned him on this image details=). Beautiful work.

Duncan! thanks for the comment. This was one of the first studio shots I did for alternative printing when I started with saltprints(that means, exposing and developing the negative for saltprint). So I tried to light it in a contrasty way. That´s the reason why the backlight is so harsh... My mistake. What I like of the shot is his posture. Maybe she is a little out of mood (a small smile, contrasted to his serious superior gesture). The print is nicer than the scan (its quite difficult to get good scans from textured paper.).
I´m still trying to get some kind of "formula" for lighting in studio, exposing and developing for alternative processes... It would be easier If I used digital negs =). You just scan a normal Silver print, load the contrast curve according to the process, and print BIG negatives. (I have just 4x5 negs.)
Good luck!

Any thoughts???? thanks

Crhis. This is a really nice image. I love the tone and the DOF, but what really attracts me of this shot is how the only blacks in the photo are in the dog´s eyes and nose. Did you get to it in the darkroom?.
Good work!.

Beautiful. Original. Looks like a montage. An irreal window.

Beautiful. Tells me a story... I love th shadows.

Really interesting. It s a pitty that you didn´t frame it a little bit lower, including the hand, and eliminating the air over his head.

Any Thoughts?. Thanks!

Shahar, I hope you don´t mind that I´m uploading a new versin of the same image. What do you think about it?
Quick 2 min adjustment in PS. B&W. Increased contrast in sky and house.
-
I would frame it more to the right.
I think it needs some colour correction. Or is it the look you gave to the image?
I love the 2.35 ratio!
-
I love the gradual transition from blue to light blue.
And the almost perfect balance that the symetric sticks give to the shot.

I like it. A lot.
I don´t know why is it that you "can´t" frame the horizon in the middle. It´s like a basic rule in most of the photography books I´ve read; and I think that in some cases, it helps the image a lot. Cause when your are shooting this kind of photographs, that the land and the sky are interesting, you can´t decide where to put the horizon line. I finally take 3 photograps, with the line in the middle and (just because of that stupid rule) in the upper and lower third.
Do really people think that framing a shot like this is nt good, or you just follow the books?.
Good work Tom!.

This is certainly not real! Tell me it isn´t!.
It looks like a painting of another planet.
Impressive landscape. Awesome framing.

Thanks fred! I just started expèrimenting with VDB and it is really interesting. =). I just have to shoot more 4x5 (I´m running out of well exposed and nice images to print).
Good Luck!

Beautiful.
If heaven exists, I say it would look like this...
-
Tom. I would leave it as in the first upload. The soft contrast and mostly hilights with blown out zones remembers me to the nudes in platinum of Irving Penn.
-
I didnt realize it was crooked. I´ll fix it and upload it again.
-
Now I understand why the tones are so special.
Did you desaturate the image when scanned?
I don´t see any tonalty.

Originality?
