  1. The House of Representatives has decided to [send a bill to the Senate for their consideration, which, if passed by the Senate and then signed into law by the President, would] extend daylight savings time.

...just a refresher for those who have no flippin' idea how the country works...

  3. Tom and Ray Magliozzi have long advocated for new cars to come pre-nicked, scratched, and dinged so that folks won't care about such trivial matters. I bought my first used car a few months back, and I can't tell you how liberating it was to have an imperfect car. I could relax and enjoy it for what it is, not obsess over the first, inevitable parking lot mishap (as I have foolishly with my new cars). For this and other reasons, I will likely never buy a new car again. I guess cameras, for some people, are the same way.
  4. In Chicago, the Green Mill jazz club is the coolest spot. Go on Thursday, when it's big band night. It's at Broadway and Lawrence. You will NOT be disappointed.

In NWI, I heard Smidt's was bought out by some new folks. Bob S., is this true? (Also, Bob, as a side note, did you know Jack Parry at the Gary Post back when you freelanced?)

  5. K.F. makes an excellent point. Before you buy anything, clean the mirror yourself and you will see 40 years worth of crud, dust, outgassing, etc. reveal a couple extra stops of brightness. Do the same with the ground glass and fresnel that make up the viewing screen parts. These are fairly easy operations, especially the mirror (the entire hood assesmbly lifts off after removing maybe 4 small screws, and then you can remove the mirror itself for cleaning).

Once you've given it a home cleaning, you'll probably see enough of an improvement that you'll no longer need to spend the money for a new screen.

  6. I have a Gossen Scout 2 that works nicely with my folders. Really, anything cheap will give you a leg-up on your current guesstimation procedure. If you're interested in my Scout 2, or my Sekonic L-158, drop me a line (I only need one of these meters).

I was going to sell the extra meter along with a Zenobia 645 folder (with a 4-element Neo-Hesper). Actually, if anyone's interested in the Zenobia...drop me a line. It comes with a Telex accessory rangefinder (shoe-mount), too. Check my feedback on eBay, username jgpyke.

  7. Unequivocally, get a TLR. In your price range, you will not do better than a TLR. Any Yashica with a Yashinon lens will do (e.g., Yashica D, Yashicamat, etc.). Just make sure the taking lens is totally clear and the shutter functions properly, etc. You might even find an Autocord in that range. But stay away from folders (I know, there are a lot of enthusiasts here in this thread). Too many potential problems. Plus, getting something with a coupled rangefinder (or even a coupled one) will likely be out of your price range. Get a TLR. Folders are a novelty item. Your money is much, much better spent in an TLR.
  8. You need to somehow decrease the circumference of the inside of the cap (obviously). I've seen this done with a small piece of felt, a cm or so, acting as a spacer (must've been glued, I suppose). Maybe something like that would work? You'd need an adhesive that will bond to metal and your spacing material. Just a thought.
