  1. Saw this in "The Gear Ahead" in Pop Photo. When the batch of 8

megapixel pro-sumer cameras came out from Nikon, Canon, Sony,

Minolta, etc. the reviews said that at 400 ISO they all had noise and

purple-fringing. This is a 7.4 megapixel camera (very cool looking)

that I hope won't have those problems. No reviews of this Pentax

model yet, in magazines or at the online digital camera review

sites. There are a few very complimentary new-user comments though.

Has anyone freqenting photo.net bought one of these yet?

  2. Two questions: Fairly frequently when I try to rate a photo I get a

message that I have already rated the photo /7 and /7. It asks if I

wish to overwrite this "earlier" rating. This is a photo I am

looking at for the first time and have never previously rated. Any

idea why I get such a message? Second question, there is a

photograph I want to rate, and I received the message I referred to

above. I opted to overwrite or replace the false "earlier" rating.

That didn't work and photo.net has not accepted my rating. Now when

I try to rate it I get a message "Rating insert failed". Again, any

idea why I get such a message? I rate other photos several times a

week, but this one will not accept my votes. Thank you.

  3. I have been referred to a capability in Photo.net that I did not know

existed - HomePage. Apparently without establishing your own domain,

subscribers to Photo.net can create something resembling their own

web-page or web-site within Photo.net. Are there instructions

anywhere on how to use this?

  4. As a paid member of photo.net for several years, I understand and appreciate the site's artistic intent. In fact, now that I think about it, I have even entered comments criticizing postings because they obviously had no artistic intent. Further, I value the ratings I get and want to have an average that's as high as possible. That's why I don't want the 3s, 4s, and 5s (well, I'll take the 5s) on these record shots to be figured into my overall average. So, yes, I can ignore them and yes, maybe photo.net is not the right place to post event photos for friends and other participants to see. But, as I shot these and then left the country/state for home, it occurred to me that this site was an Internet location at which I could let others see the pictures. They are temporary postings to be removed after people have had a chance to look and so I guess the ratings don't matter. I just wondered if there was a way to suppress them from the start. Thanks for all the replies.

Marshall: what would be an example of a photo-sharing site?

  5. I am getting ratings on photos on which I did not request a critique. They are in a folder with some photos on which I requested critique, but judging by one comment, a photo.netter found them in "Recent Uploads", not in a Request for Critique gallery. Puzzling, but I guess it doesn't matter much. After a few weeks, when the participants have had time to look at them, I will delete them from photo.net. Thanks for your reply.
  6. I took a number of photos that I am posting on photo.net in order to

share them with participants in the event. I don't want ratings. I

didn't think photo.netters would find these photos and rate them, but

they are. How do I designate a photo as one that people shouldn't

rate? Can I do that once it's been uploaded? Or must I do it at

    time of upload?

  7. It used to be that when you chose "Top Photos" the default ranking

was by number of ratings. I see you've switched that to the average

achieved by a photo. I like the change, and it should reduce the

number of nudes that rise to the top just because they get a lot of

ratings, while not necessarily being the best photos. However, one

more improvement would be to require that a photo have 8 or 10

ratings before it is included in the Top Photos. Right now for

example there is a photo at the top of the list that has only three

ratings. It's good, but not that great. So, would it be possible to

set a threshold of 8 or 10 ratings so that those first ratings from

friends and family do not move a photo to the top of the list? I

think if you require some minimum number of ratings then the pictures

at the top of the Top Photos screen will deservedly be there.

  8. I posted a photo and requested feedback. I got ratings and some good

comments. Several people suggested I submit a larger version of the

photo. I would like to substitute a larger version of the image

while maintaining the scores and comments from my first submission.

Is this possible? Or do I have to submit a new image and start from

    scratch with comments and ratings?

  9. I am going to Venice in a few months. I know that it is a very

photogenic city, but if anyone has "must see" locations, please let

me know. In addition to the uniqueness of the architecture, canals,

etc. I'd like to get some people pictures, maybe at markets or non-

    touristy piazzas.

Also, if you have a portfolio primarily comprised of pictures from

Venice, I'd like to look to get some ideas.

    Thanks

  10. A few days ago I changed my e-mail address at Photo.net from

<deleted> to <deleted>. I have tried twice to send e-

mails to that address and I get a message back from photo.net saying

politely something like, "We tried, but we can't find

<deleted>." I tried to e-mail another subscriber about two

weeks ago at the photo.net e-mail address in his user profile and

that bounced back with the same message. Is this capability not

    working or what?

  11. I thought when the 1-7 rating system was implemented that a rule was

stated that a rating of 1 or 7 would not be accepted without a

comment. One of my photos recently received a 1 for aesthetics (out

of line with the prior ratings) and there is no comment. I'd like to

know why this guy rated my image (Ruff Day) so poorly. Isn't this

    rule being enforced anymore?

  12. Regardless of what category I choose, I seem to be getting Fine Arts

images to critique. I started in the Fine Arts area and then changed

to Pets. I am getting images of calla lilies, storefront windows,

landscapes, etc. No pets. So I tried Portraits and I am still

getting a range of subjects that indicates I am still in the Fine

Arts category. Anyone else experiencing this on Sunday October 5?

  13. I like this plan. I agree with the suggestions that in order to rate you should have some of your own photos posted. Only fair.

Further, I'd like an upper threshhold that would require comments too. If people describe what they like when rating 8 or above, then others can learn what makes the good images successful and try to incorporate those techniques into their own work if they wish to emulate a style.

I was on the verge of either trying to start a movement or unilaterally rating 1/1 those images that are 5 times the size that is specified for photo.net submissions. "Read the recommentdations on how to submit an image!" will now be my comment. I will also feel more comfortable now giving low ratings to computer generated "art" that does not belong on a photo site. Just because the word "Photo" is in the name of the software you use, doesn't make it a photograph.
