For real fun in converting jpegs to black and white, use Calculations (under Edit). In the Result Box (drop down menu at the bottom of the Calculations pop-up) I choose New Document. Then I change that document under Image from Multichannel to Grayscale or RGB. And you're ready to go. And yes, change from 8 bit to 16 bit while you work.
It's great...and fun.
I'm including an example...just excuse the sky...I was making a quick panarama shot...and didn't really clean it up.

I left my Nikon Coolpix 5000 in a satchel on the trunk of my car and
drove off....when I slowed down for a stop sign, the bag flew off
the car. The Nikon worked a couple of times after that...just one
or two shots.....and then nothing. The zoom is extended, and stuck
in that position.
The last time that happened (that the lens got frozen extended)
someone on photo.net suggested that I leave the batteries out a few
days and then try the camera again, perhaps giving it a nice dull
thud on the bottom with my hand to get it started again. It worked
wonderfully. I tried that. Didn't do it this time.
So I'm thinking.....maybe I could give it a really really hard bang
and it might go back into place. It seems that it got off track or
something. I can hear the battery/whatever grind a little as if it
were trying to do something.
I just wondered, since I can buy another one for the price of
having this one fixed....or for much less.....what creative thing
you might think of to do with the camera........

Dennis, I hope you have a gazillion photos of New Orleans. I think this story can't be photographed enough. I was thinking the other day that if all the people who had ever been to Mardi Gras and had fun, sent in $1. for a People's Levee Fund, a proper levee could be built on that money alone! Say, the people who went for ten years, sent in $10, and etcetera.
And just built the levee. Who needs the government?
I was thinking about driving down to New Orleans in January or so. Would it be easy enough to get in and photograph?

Jochen....funny you should mention the Speedgraphic. Here is an old Post in the Large Format forum I posted a while back. Someone on the forum told me it was a Pacemaker Speed Graphic. Any comments on this post?

I've been watching the jobs listings on EPOnline frequently since
Marc Williams mentioned it here some time ago. (I searched and saw
that many photographers at photo.net use it.)

I'm finally thinking about taking the plunge, slowly at first. I
would just like to hear to some recent stories about these jobs, and
also, usually...is it hard to win a bid? Which I guess is silly,
because it all depends on the portfolio and etceteras...but imagine
all things being even...for that question.

Thanks, kiddo! Every little bit helps....to move on, and as you say...just do it!

As I was thinking about the upcoming purchase of a DSLR-and probably
the Nikon D70s as recommended by many of you considering my needs
and price range, I thought about this friend of mine in town who
buys every new Nikon Digital as it comes out.
One, he just likes Nikon, and two, he supplies the cameras to his
entourage/wedding team (who are mostly young local girls for minimun
pay and who love being a "photographer" and dressing up and meeting
other dressed up people). The cameras are given out on the location,
and are returned before leaving the location. My friend takes
immaculate care of all his equipment, and I've never seen one of the
girls drop a camera.
By now, I'm sure he's in line for the new Nikon ....I forgot what it
is...the D200?
So, even though we haven't talked one year, I thought I might ask if
he would give me a good deal..or some deal....on any camera he might
want to get rid of, or have in access. (He's given me a camera
before for my birthday...a Coolpix 900 or something...when they were
only about a year or so old...and I'm sure the deal would be good.
Even after not speaking for a year......)
So I guess the question comes down to what about buying used from
what I consider a reliable source? Pros and Cons.
Also I'm having this nagging feeling that there's something else I
want...I just haven't thought of it, and no not spending that much
money on what I'd like to have through the next year (a Nikon DSLR)
would be good...until I understand what this nagging feeling
is.....I suspect somewhere that at the back of mind I'm
thinking/longing for a large format camera of some sort.......not
sure......)
Okay....thanks for helping me think......

What I do in PhotoShop CS is to go to Image/Calculations and work there with screen or multiply (or any other blending........depends on what you want). The before I click okay, I set the "result" to be a "new document". Then I copy and paste that black and white result on a layer above my color photograph, and in the layers pallette I choose screen...(or sometimes multiplay or overlay....again...whatever the needs are) and then move the opacity of that layer around until I get the effect I want.
If you have several layers of your photo, in the Calculations menu you can also choose which layer you want to affect.....or work with if you want to single one out.

Okay, I'm just about ready.....I gathered from a question I asked on
this forum that the D70s was the way to go within my price range and
needs....etc.....

So, are there any special sale times for digital?

I found a good price (best price cameras) which offers these
packages in my price range.....but I don't really understand the
difference....could you explain...or pick the one you would choose?

Thank you.....

Wait for me! Here I am with my son in the later seventies! And believe it or not.....my apartment was just a few blocks down 135 from Al's house! Who knew....but whereas Al found NMiami as the center of the universe....I found it only a place to hang my hat while I traveled from there to South Miami, Coconut Grove, and Fort Lauderdale! Two ships in the night, huh? (I did teach in the NOrth Miami MMAM Art School...and loved it.....)

Just beautiful. Thank you. I am going to try Fuji Neopan 1600 with my Canon AE-1 in a couple of weeks for a Christmas festival. I was dreading it in a way,--it's become so boring and routine.
I think these Halloween photos will have me viewing the Christmas festival in a whole new light...pun intended!

Gee, and my sister made my mother throw away the Gibralter of a rock they found in her ear....centuries of ear wax.
But anyway....nice intimate photos!Maybe they should have been posted with your Halloween pics!

What exactly did you do in PhotoShop? Could you post a photo...say 10:41 or 10:47 without the PhotoShop?
I love these photos. Everything about them. There's something about these photos that give the feeling of passing through the lens.....that the lens reached out and grabbed the images in spite of lighting. Etraordinary!

I forgot...I meant to ask that too. What does "D70s" mean? Is that another camera?

I read the previous post on the D50 and D70, but there are
still a few questions left for me.

And I would like to include the D100 in this comparison field.

I read a review in Popular Photography that recommended the D50
over the D70. They thought the D50 was an improvement. But I'm not
so sure after reading the thread below about both cameras.

My experience has been with the D1H and X, also later the D2X, the
D100, and the D70. However these cameras did not belong to me, but
to the photographer I sometimes worked for. I had no time to spend
with the cameras except right before a wedding shoot when he would
thrust whatever camera I would be using that day at me. So I can't
really distinguish between them that much

I know that my price range would be just short of the D100, but if
it were to prove to be the better choice, I could push my expenses a
little.

My uses would be personal, for my own photographs, landscapes,
objects, and things like that. For business, I would try to start
with some low key weddings, with a partner, and I am often asked to
do portraits.

My last digital was a Nikon Coolpix 5000, which was a really good
little camera until I left my camera satchel on the trunk of my car
and drove away.

So I would like to go for a DSLR this time.

I have read so much back and forth between the D50 and the D70 that
I can't get a good clear picture of which is better, or which is
better for me. And if I am going semi-professional, should I
consider the D100.

If you could just ramble on about them a little, I would
appreciate it very much.
christmas greetings to photo.net!
