  1. Thank you everyone for the input I following ci p suggestions. Clearly one days was too rushed but at least I know that I would like to visit in the future and spend about 4 days.

I was lucky to see a few real geisha's in Gion as they were stepping out of their homes in the evening.

    Thanks--Ed

  2. Just thought I would share a positive experience with Canon. I own a 5D and

could not find a dealer locally in Fort Myers FL that would clean my sensor. It

did not have dust but some type of stain on the sensor so today while I am in

tokyo on business and walked over to the Canon store where they also repair

cameras and they cleaned the sensor and updated the firmware in 30minutes for

    FREE.

Not sure if Canon does this in the USA but I was pleasently surprised

  3. Hi,

I am in Japan and will find my self in Kyoto on Saturday from 9am to 8pm. From

the research that I have done it appears that Kyoto is larger than I thought

and I could waste all my time just going between all of the sites.

I would like to photograph life there. Any suggestions on the best one or two

areas where I could spend my time just wandering around that would provide some

    photo opportunities.

Since this is a busienss trip I packed light and brought a 70-200mm and a 35mm

    Thanks--Ed

  4. Hi Shawn,

I did a safari in South Africa back in 2003 and I can tell you that you really need a long

lense. I used 100-400mm on a Canon D30 so it was really about 150mm-600mm. I could

have left all of my other stuff at home. I do travel also with a digial point and shoot and

have tried many of them. The problem is most of them are not good in low light and do

not allow for adding a lense unless you get a SLR.

Look at Sony, I typically hate Sony and avoid them but I must tell you I just purchased a

small p&s and it is the best digial p&s that I have purchaed. Very sharp and excellent in

    low light. http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?

    catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=20008504

Also look at Panasonic. They have some that have longer lenses and the images look good

but I am not sure how well they work in low light.

I suggest that you go to this site http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp and do

some research then go to a store and look at them . Based on looking at this site it looks

like a Canon S5 IS could be a good choice and it allow for threaded lense

  5. I have a Macbook Pro(intel) and an epson 2200 that I print via usb. I have never had the

problem that you described. I am sure you already did this but did you check to see if the

    printer heads are clogged?

One time I did have a yellow cast but it ended up being either version of Aperture or some

of the OS drivers because when the latest version of the OS and Aperture the problem

went away. Unforturnitly I did both upgrades at the same time so I can not say what fixed

    the problem.

OSX 10.4.10 is my currect version

  6. Hi,

Not sure that this is the right place to post this so I will applogize in advance.

I am looking to get 6 to 10 images printed at 40"x60" on high gloss paper. Does anyone know of any good

services. Prefer someone in Fort Myers Florida area or if you know of a service that does work well via

email and then shipping the images to me so I can mount and frame.

My photographs are from a Canon 5D and I use Apples's aperture program for editting since I shoot RAW.

I could export to Photoshop or JPG and was planning on printing a 8x10 of each so that they could see the

    colors that I

expect. I am not sure if they will size the image or I need to.

    Thanks-Ed

  7. Thanks and I think I agree with all of you. It would be fun to own the printer and I could most

likely have it paid for by what I plan to print in year one however then you have to take into

account the learning, wasted supplies, and all of the ink that will be lost with clogs which I

suspect could be worse than my 2200.

Eric, I would be looking for someone in the Fort Myers Florida area.

    Thanks--Ed

  8. I am looking to print about 20 or so large prints measuring about 3'x5' and I was think if it would make

sense to purchase a wide format printer to do my own printing and therefore have control over the color

calibration and ability to print on different media.

The printer that I was thinking of was the Epson 9800 but I am concerned that this is not a printer for

causal printing. Once I do the inital 20 prints my guess is that I will print 4 to 6 per year if I had the

    printer.

Not that this matters but I use Apples Aperture software and print to an Epson 2200 and have some

    experience with color calibration.

I was hoping that someone might share their thoughts if I should consider purchasing the printer or just

pay a service to do my printing.

    Thanks--Ed

  9. I have had cards get corrupt before and lost some images both times it happened when I was

deleting some photographs and taking more photographs.

I found it best to treat the card like a roll of film. Do not delete individual images, upload all

of the images to the computer then but the card back in the camera and format it. Doing this

I have never had a problem with corruption

  10. Edwin,

I lived in Stockholm for about 18months and have also travel to Copenhagen a few times.

You will be happy with both locations. I would fly given your limited time but you could

always do the overnight train but my guess is the cost is about the same.

In Stockholm I would spend 1 day in Gamla Stan area (the old town), one day in Slussen

area and also Kungholmen for the town hall, 1 day in Djurgarden to walk the park and see

the Vassa, and 1 day to take a boat ride to into the Archipelago.

That time of year in Stockholm you will have close to 20+ hours of daylight so you can

make the most of yur time by not sleeping that much.

  11. Thanks everyone for the response. I just got home from Hong Kong and Gerry you are correct I was looking more about the long term affects.

Frank, thanks for wasting your time and the bandwidth on a response. I have used this forum a lot and you are the first to respond in such a manner. I understand the basics but have yet to experience or even know of someone who has had the interior elements fog.

  12. Sorry if this is a basic question but it is the first time this has happened to

    me.

I was in Hong Kong and the humidity was above 90% and when I walked outside

from the hotel my lens fogged up. Not a problem I thought it would clear in

about 30 minutes while I walk to the park.

The exterior lense did clear itself but it appears that the internal elements

also fogged up and this took about 1 hour or so to clear.

The lens in question is a tamron 28-300 that I use as a travel lens. This has

never happened to any of the canon L lenses.

My concern is that moisture on the inside of the lense can be a good thing and

I would think it could effect the lense.

Can anyone share experiences, is this because I am using a consumer lense?

    Thanks--Ed

  13. David,

From looking at my travel book that I used, yes I believe I went the way you described.

If I remember correctly it was about a 4 hour drive with about a 45 minute stop to get out and walk before contining on plus we had a 15 minute stop at a B&B along the way.

Once we got there we had about 2 hours to wonder around then got back on the bus for the reverse trip.

If I were to do it again I would spend the night camping there.

I used the Insight compact Travel Guide for Iceland. It was very good about the driving distances and time. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/9812349308/sr=8-8/qid=1140552708/ref=sr_1_8/002-2313386-3939229?%5Fencoding=UTF8

  14. David,

A few years back I went to Iceland in August and I drove tehe ring road from Egilsstadir to

Reykjavik. When I got to hvolsvollur I to a bus tour to Landmannalaugar. My rental was a

small toyota so I did not risk driving to landmannalaugar and when I saw the 4x4 bus pass

rental SUV trying to cross the rivers I was glad i took the bus. Many of the SUVs had

problems due to the depth of the water and ended up having to take the air filter out and

let it dry. The downside was that I could not stop and photograph whenever I wanted.

    I drove about 800 to 850km in 5 or 6 days.

My suggestion is to verify your route with the rental agency to make sure that the RAV4

    can make it there.

Have fun, I think Iceland is one of the most photogenic countries .

  15. I have taken a workshop and a photo tour with Richard Martin. Both were great. Maybe it is just me but my guess is that it is Richard's teaching style that within one of shooting with him I see the world in a different way.

Even on his tours he provides a lot of assistance but he is not one to take your camera and frame the shot. He likes to help you frame what you see and also point out other shots. Think of him as your visual interpreter.

Can not say enough good things and his prices are more than reasonable.

    His site is www.richardmartinphoto.com

I did the Sicily tour with him last year and would have done the Tuscany tour but I have other plans during those dates. He has an local assistant that really help get you off the beaten path.

  16. I have always got great advise here so I thought I may seek input

about a trip that I am begining to plan.

I would like to take a 12 month trip to photograph and visit some

countries that I have not seen yet. My list is long right now and I

may need to shorten it but here goes:

Russia, Poland, Spain Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, India,

    Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore

I love to do landscapes, cityscapes and would also like to get

    photographs of local people.

Does anyone have any experiences that you can share about an extend

multi country trip that may assist as I prepare and research my trip.

I have traveled a lot in Europe and been to Tokyo and korea serveral

times and will be in China for a few weeks early next year. So I do

consider myself an experianced business traveler but this will be my

    first 12 month holiday

    Thanks--Ed

  17. In the middle of September I will be in Scotland for a weekend. I will be flying in and out of

Edinburgh and I am interested in making the best use of the short time I will be there to

    do some photography.

I like to photograph landscapes and ruins of buildings but I am not sure how far from

Edinburgh I would need to travel to get some interesting landscapes. I could just stay in

Edinburgh and do some street photography but that seems to easy and boring.

Any suggestions for how I can best spend these 2 days would be appreciated

  18. thanks for you input, I have no plan to give my work away if i have learned nothing else

from this board is that we need to charge a fair price or else we all lose.

i was expecting the 100% markup but 200% or higher I did not think of.

I have found the owners names and once I have some of my work prepared I am planning

on going to them and see if I can understand from them under what terms would they sell

my work and be open to consignment if that works out the best for both of us.

    thanks--Ed

  19. I am thinking of having a 1000 posters printed for sale to local gift shops. I have identified

local shops that sell tourist posters in my area and they price them anywhere from $12 to

    $17.

One option would be to due consignment but I would prefer that the shops puchase the

posters up front since this is how I understand they purchase their other merchandise.

What I do not know is what is the average markup in gift shop for tourist souvenirs.

Another way to look at it is what margin to they require?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should sell the posters for so that the shop

    oweners make their margin?

    Thanks--Ed

  20. I want to create an action that I can call from batch automation. All the action needs to do

is open each file that is in the source folder that I selected when I started the batch job

and then save it as a jpeg image in the same folder that the source images resides in with

a the same name just a different file extension.

In CS you can not do a Save-As for jpeg and when I use the Save-for-web I do not see how

I can control were the image is saved when I start the batch job.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks--Ed

  21. The error message indicates that the file was not fully recovered. When i lost some images

I had to try serveral different recovery software before I got all my images back. One of the

software that I used was imagerecall but I ended up using LC Technology International

Filerecovery & photorecovery for the mac to get the remaining images.

I think they have an eval copy that you can test
