  1. I currently shoot with a Pentax 6x7. While I love the system, I am getting tired of lugging it

around. I am considering moving down to a Hasselblad 500 series or a Mamiya AFD 645. I

often crop, so I know that i will be cutting down from the 6x6 to something like 645 for

    some images.

My first question concerns the quality of the Mamiya 645 AFD lenses versus the

Hasselbald's lens (55, 80, 150, and perhaps the 120). Making images up to about 16x20

    will I notice much difference?

A second concern is that I wonder in practical terms how much I would gain with the 645

when compared to using my Leica system. The 6x7 negative is 5 times larger than the

35mm, but the 645 is only about 2.5 times larger. Is the difference between 645 and 35

substantial? I love lots of detail in my images.

    Thanks in advance,

    David

  2. Thanks to all of you for your comments. Wow, what variety -- leave it at home, you will get stuff the pro didn't ... . My take away from this is: (1) don't get in the way of the pro -- hadn't planned on it, (2) don't shoot formals -- hadn't planned on it, (3) look for the moments that the pro might miss because I have a different level of access -- good idea, (4) other than the quick snap in the chapel, put the camera away -- good idea, and (5) let the pro know that you are just shooting as a friend trying to get some candid shots to share with the couple.

Thanks for the ideas and confirmation.

  3. Thanks to all of you for your comments about travel to Paris. At this point, the trip is still a go. Please, if there are any changes in the "city," please post. I will keep watching.

Now, it is time to start packing film :)

  4. Next year, I will be attending a wedding of a friend. They have hired

a professional, but I wanted to give them, as a present, a

small "informal album" of images made by a friend (me). I plan to

shoot in b&w with available light, using my Leica's so as to minimize

intrustion. I'll probably shoot with either Tri-X or Delta 3200. Any

hints on what not to do? What to look for? How not to offend the

    professional photographer?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. I agree with the other posts that DEM gives a very good overview of Gibson's work up to about 2001. Light Years is also excellent, but Overtones is my favorite -- today, at least. Overtones is a presentation of diptychs, where he has drawn on about 40-50 images published previously. Gibson is a master of imagery, especially when he uses the book as a medium of presentation.

  6. We are planning to be in Paris the week of Nov 14. What's it like in the city at this point?

How safe is it for tourists? Our plan is to remain in the city and not travel outside of Paris.

    Any tips appreciated?

If you want to email me offline, that is fine.

  7. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I have the sense that one should not worry too much about the "riots" in Paris we are seeing and reading about, correct?

    Any more information is welcome.

    thanks again.

  8. In mid-November I will be in Paris for a week. Any suggestions on

photography galleries to see and places to shoot. I am open to

shooting a variety of themes, so all ideas are welcomed.

    Tips while there?

    Thanks in advance,

  9. Like so many photographers, I am always in search of the "perfect

bag" for carrying equipment when out shooting/walking/traveling in

cities or country side. I am looking for a bag that can carry two M

    bodies with lenses attached (35 and 50), a 90/2.8 M, a 15/4.5, 20

rolls of film, an umbrella, passport and tickets (not when shooting,

but when moving about in the airport), smallish notebook, a few small

items -- pda, ipod. It should also be water resistant or proof. A

modest level of padding is fine and I would love to have a "lashing

cord" so that I could lash a light jacket or sweater to the bag.

I have a small backpack, but having to take it off all of the time to

get something out is a pain. I do like having something that can be

put on the shoulders or a shoulder when walking about.

    Any suggestions appreciated. thanks
