  1. My post was more about services and features implementation and bug corrections. That would show users what has been taken into consideration on the short, medium, long run. As for the website traffic evolution I don't feel really concerned about that -as a PN end-user - I guess it is more sensitive information restricted to marketing and sales persons.
  2. Do you have at PN a document drafting the evolutions of the site - I

think that would be very nice for people contributing suggestions, bug

reports, ideas, etc. about having an idea on the features you decide

to implement, delete, correct in some sort of timeframe. Besides I

think that would convey to your subscribers about the amount of work

    that represents.

    Regards,

    LL

  3. <i>"(...)You are asking that the details of digital manipulation be a part of critique request? Or, that the photographer enter the details of any digital manipulations in the "detail/technique" section of the photo information for the critiquer to critique? or, both? (...)"</i><p>

Well... both actually now that you say that... :-)<br>

I feel _very_ uncomfortable not being able to see - at first sight - on a critique requested by the photog and on "Critique Photos" presentation layout whether the image has been digitally manipulated or not.

  4. <i>Occasionally, I will step in my backyard, camera in hand,

looking for something that catches my eye - something that I

would find worth photographing. Most of the time, I come back

with either nothing or shots so uninteresting that they end up

thrown away and forgotten before they even make it back from

the lab (or deleted if digital). </i>

<p>Luis, my personal experience is that the more I want to take

good pictures the less successful I am... somehow. It is more

like a question of "presence" and "disponibility". The picture

comes to you, not the opposiye (I don't go out hunting for it)...

This is a reason why I became more and more interested in

asian religions and philosophy. It's about overcoming your

    <b>inner resistances</b> and <b>"lacher prise"</b>.

<p>BTW - if other readers share a similar point of

view/experiences I would be interested in hearing from you.

  5. you got to distinguish TAKING PHOTO from USING PHOTO - there is no law preventing you from taking anything or anybody - except that in some touristic place of Paris you may get annoyed by some sort of law officer if you are shooting with a tripod (eg. Jardin du Luxembourg) - now as for the USE it mostly depends if you are gonna to publish them or not. In the case they get published some people might compalin your photo has caused prejudice to them in someways (they have to make the proof of it). Also there is a distinction when the character is clearly identifiable and alone on the picture with group of people. If you happen to get to Paris before Sept 22nd I strongly recommend you to go see the retrospective on the French photographer Jacques Henri LARTIGUE at Centre Georges¨Pompidou (Beaubourg). http://www.cnac-gp.fr/Pompidou/Home.nsf/docs/fhome - I went there this morning, it's a terrific exhibition ! Also, at Musee d'Orsay - http://www.musee-orsay.fr - there is the exhibition "photography at the turn of the century" until Oct 19th, and an exhib. on the French Daguerreotype tull August 17th.
  6. Dear Robert,<br>

<p>First of all let me say I enjoyed reading your essay a lot. It conveys very strong ideas, it is very well written and articulated. However I wanted to comment on a couple of shortcomings or shortcuts you take.<br><p>

o Was it really necessary to personalize your text on Salgado ? It apears, to my own astonishment, that Salgado's work is controversial, so may be your essay's title made more people read it. Which I think was unecessary because of its intrinsic qualities.<br><p>

o I quickly browsed through two books from Salgado published by Editions La Martiniere ("Exodes", "la main de l'Homme"), none of the photographs were captioned. I believe the caption from the Bombay picture you mention is not the original caption, if any.<br><p>

o May be it would have been worth writing about the "distance" between the photographer and his subjects. In the 70's John Szarkowski wrote about photographs being either Windows or Mirrors. As for me I think Salgado's work could mostly be considered as a window on the world. May be the "unusual" distance he takes made you react... Also I would add that your text is a good counter-example to your statement about Salgado's work inducing passivity.<br><p>

May be this is the beauty of his work : windows being viewed as mirrors..<br>

    <p>LL<br>

<br>PS1: I apology for my English (not my mother tongue).<br>

PS2: I would like to read other texts from you. Please keep me updated.

  7. Chuck - I mostly use a <b>M4P</b>, a <b>M6ttl</b> and a <b>FM2</b>. <br>

<p><b><u>Ms</u></b> : addicted to the viewfinder, IMHO prism system can not compare to the experience of a direct viewfinder, BTW your statement about WYSIWYG is partially false ; <b>Ms</b> allow me much much slower speeds than the <b>FM2</b> ; <b>Ms</b> are les conspicuous ; my <b>FM2</b> with a tamron 90mm macro lens takes much more room in my bag<br>

<p><b><u>FM2</u></b> : I like the <b>FM2</b> for its construction, simplicity, no electronic (except for the lightmeter, which I don't use) - I use the <b>FM2</b> for macro work and focals > 90mm ; the "prism" view is ok but so less bright than a viewfinder ; I changed the standard visor for the grid visor which is ok <br>

<p>The thing you missed is that the viewfinder system has intrinsic qualities and drawbacks ; it is the same for SLR ; two different systems ; two different uses.<br>

    Cheers,<br>

  8. Thank you very much for the sum up ! I get it now...

Well my profile says I'm a member of the www.photo.net community since July 17, 2001 (I stumbled on Philip Greenspun's photos while looking up for people using Illustra database...). I've been active only since a few weeks. I consider PN a really great great place. This place is an open system (from a systemic point of view), rating system is part of that system. It appears this module can be "cheated" or "biaised" on purpose or not. I would consider quite dramatic PN would be endangered by people taking advantage of an open system such as PN. Please note I am _not_ saying that someone or an other has biased the system on purpose, I'm just saying it is a possibility, again with or without "evil" intent. I consider a normal decision from PN to think about a nice way out when such cases happen. I think the "out of contest/hors competition" section was a great idea because it was quite neutral. Now I also find a bit shocking when people talk right away about lawyers (may be because I'm European) whereas PN is in my opinion a wonderful project not to be tainted by "usual business" stuff - I'm not sure I make myself clear.

Whatever - I only hope every PN members will go on acting as mature people realizing the wonderful tool we have here.
