Luca,
Ralph Gibson described his technique in "Darkroom": EI 100-400, Rodinal 1+25 (actually 10 ml per roll) for 11 minutes at 68?C, agitate for 10 seconds every 90 seconds.
The times work for the new Tri-X but it's not as grainy as it used to be back in the 70s. Good luck!

E-72, minus the Bromide. It contains phenidone instead of Metol and Ascorbic Acid instead of Hydroquinone.

This is Neopan 1600 pushed one stop in Rodinal. Don't do it unless you want absolutely no shadow (and midtone) detail and blown out highlights. XTOL will do a better job but don't expect miracles...the shadows will still lack texture and the transition into the midtones is very steep.

Phil,
why don't you try shooting HIE without an IR filter? The wood effect, as far as I understand, will be drastically reduced if not eliminated. If the lack of an IR filter doesn't suffice, using a filter that blocks the IR part of the spectrum might be the way to go.

Marc,
do yourself a favour and don't use demineralized water for washing either negatives or paper. The washing process depends on the exchange of ions, which will only work in tap water.

I'd go with the Foma 100. Its quality is on par with that of western films and its look resembles APX 100 to a certain extent. I wouldn't develop it in R09 however. Every time I did that little bits of the emulsion came off during the development process. When I switched to Rodinal the problem was gone.

For an example take a look at this: sb.

Your question is somewhat moot since you'll see how Plus-X develops in Rodinal compared to the developer(s) you've been using so far as soon as you try it. That being said I find that Plus-X and Rodinal don't work together all that well. The few times I tried that combination I found the negatives too grainy. My favourite 100-ASA-film with Rodinal is APX 100. The sharpness this combination produces rocks and while the grain is larger than that of TMX in Rodinal it looks lovely in my opinion.
Cheers,
Tobias
