I like the effect of your scanning technique; the subtle purple hue makes the image interesting and gives a relaxing, cool feeling. I think the composition is good, but I'm bothered a little by the dark lower-left corner, especially because it also seems a little out-of-focus there (but maybe that's because of image compression?). A beautiful photo!

  1. I've always enjoyed this type of photo. I think this one works particularly well because each square could be a picture in its own right, and each one is composed rather nicely. In addition, the collection of squares works well as a whole, and the distribution of people throughout the whole picture is interesting. The small number of people works well also, as the squares without people help to balance the image.

  2. This is an interesting idea. However, I find that the rock is a little too dominating. It also bothers me that the skyscraper (?) is so close to the rock. Perhaps if you had positioned the scyscraper behind the rock (to hide it completely) or more to the left (to give it some more space), it would look a little better.

    Corn Field

Geraldine, Thanks for your comment! This effect was created by slightly rotating the camera between each exposure. I have just started experimenting with multiple exposures, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how the technique added motion to the corn stalks, creating a sense of wind rustling through them, as you have pointed out.

  3. This image really caught my eye. I enjoy pictures of textures like this, and you did a great job with this one. The color and shapes are very interesting, and the plant on the right gives you a place to rest your eyes but doesn't draw too much attention from the rest of the image.

  4. This photo was taken as part an assignment at a photographic

workshop. The assignment was "The Junkyard". My goal in this

particular composition was to bring out a sense of order and balance

in the otherwise unorderly pile of junk. Did I succeed? (I didn't

move any of the tanks, but I did move a tree limb off of this pile.)

Any comments, positive or negative, are appreciated! Feel free to

comment or rate the other photos from my assignment as well.

I think this composition is excellent. The large yellow area and the two bumps in the wall add just enough visual weight to the left side of the image to balance the key on the right side. This is a very pleasing image to look at. Super!

  5. I really like the color contrast in this image. From the blue sky to the yellow chair to the green leaves, it really works well. I only have two critiques. I don't really like the photographer's shadow in the bottom-left. And, I wish that the palm tree behind the chair was a little to the right so that it doesn't interfere with the chair itself. But overall, it's a very pleasing image!

  6. I really like the idea and the composition. Unfortunately, the wall and opening being washed out detracts from the image for me. I don't know if there is a lower-contrast setting on your digital camera, but something like that may have helped.

    Black Edge

I'd like to hear how others feel about this image. Don't worry about

what it is; just let me know what you think. I took quite a few

pictures in a junk yard for an assignment at a photographic

workshop. Feel free to browse the others in my "Junkyard" folder and

    comment or rate them.

  7. This is great! Very different from the usual. The composition in this shot is better, in my opinion, than the cropped image that you also made. If you cropped a little bit of the black off of the right edge in this photo, it might be a little better, but I like it pretty well as it is. Very nice! Keep experimenting!

    Chain

This is a well-done photo. I love the way that the chain counteracts the oblique lines created by the pavement and shadows. I think this is what makes the photo work so well. I'm not too crazy about the dark triangle in the lower-right corner, though. If it was possible to crop that out while retaining the corner-to-corner position of the chain, the photo would probably be improved. Also, it's hard to tell from the scan, but it looks like some of the chain and pavement is out of focus. Because of the "hard" feel of the subject matter, everything should be in focus in this case. But overall, I like it.
