I find the image to be quite powerful. It's not technically perfect, but it certainly does cause an emotional response in me. Even if the man is playing on his poverty, or disability...I still feel sadness for his situation.

As for many of the above comments...I am disgusted. Name-calling, personal attacks...I thought this site was about encouraging/improving photography. How people can display such judgemental dislike towards others that they don't even know...is beyond me.

I think this POW also highlights a failing of the ratings system. I can't understand how someone could rate this as 1/10...but perhaps I am just ignorant of what constitutes a bad photo?

  1. Unusual photo, extremely well executed. Great work! Although I naturally prefer women, its good to see that a photographer can highlight something interesting about the male body.

In short...I like it! It shows a high level of originality and the image itself leaves the viewer to make his/her own interpretations. It sort of reminds me of a beach landscape with bubbles! Well done on POW...there are a number of other images in your collection that could equally qualify for this attention.

I commented on last weeks POW that perhaps people should limit themselves to two comments on a photo and was accused of advocating censorship by someone. What I do advocate is self-control. This photo does not deserve the repeated lengthy rantings of particular people or the "comments on comments".

  2. Thanks for all the comments. In response to Tszpings comment on the colour...this is what my print looks like, ie I have not altered it in anyway. The day I took the photo was a clear but very warm smokey/hazy day which has probably resulted in the "unnatural" colour...although it is natural! The haze had a scattering effect on the light.

I also thought about cropping out the sky, but I am not 100% sure about that.

    Cheers Michael.

Perhaps Photo.net should consider limiting the number of comments that a person can make under a single photo to two? The lengthy off-topic personal meanderings of Tris, Vuk and co is surely not what this photo deserves. If you people really want to say something to eachother, try email...and leave the rest of us to enjoy this interesting and wonderful image without your "intellectual" points-scoring banter.

By the way I like the over-saturated look to the image as it brings out the contrast between the ocean and beach.

This is definately an image that blurs the boundaries of art and photography. As for the debate between digital and film (I use film)...surely its the final image that counts. It kind of reminds me of a debate between water based versus oil based paintings. Also the other debate about photoshopping images...most photos posted here are probably modified in some way. The moment a camera picks up reflected light you are dealing with a modified image. Why can't someone use photoshop to create something interesting and unique such as this image?

An interesting choice for POW...from a portfolio which shows a photographer who has considerable creative talent.

  3. I have read with interest some of the comments about this photo. I am not really qualified to comment about the technical aspects of this image nor does it really grab me in an aesthetic sense...however I think all of Amy's nude photos are reasonably good...not particularly sexual, always tasteful, yet they also convey her obvious attractiveness. How is that sexual or pornographic? I believe that it is up to the individual to decide what offends them...but if you find this image to be "porn" or primarily sexual then I think it says more about your mind than that of the photographer's. Photographers such as (the late) Mapplethorpe are perhaps closer to being borderline than any of the images Amy has posted here. Congratulations to Amy on P.O.W.
  4. This photo really paints a beautiful image. My late mother was a ballet dancer...this photo for me captures the idea of the poise and movement of dancers...preferably with some serene classical music...For a photo to have this effect it must be good. I couldn't think how you could improve on it...thanks for sharing it.

I am firmly based on the land...but you have definately captured the beauty of these sea creatures. I like the way that this photo (and the others in your portfolio) are filled with the subject matter. They are simple yet beautiful...I could imagine them in National Geographic.
