  1. Are you sure that the blotches aren't jpeg artifacts? Jpeg compression can be really ugly on areas of almost flat colour.

I seem to recall hearing that the red channel of at least the coolpix CCD had slightly more noise than the green and blue channels. As many digital cameras of the same price range tend to use the same or similar CCD elements, maybe yours suffers from the same problem. Normally this would result in points of noise (that will increase in amplitude as the length of the exposure increases) but with the addition of jpeg compression causing smoothing of the noise, the result might well be a slight reddish hue to not-quite-white areas.

I think I read about the CCD issue in a coolpix review on http://www.dpreview.com/ -- it might be worth checking out. You'll also be able to find out the make of the CCD in your camera there.

  2. Photo of iced over grass.

It wasn't until significantly after I took the photo (which I admit

isn't all that great in and of itself) that I noticed that on its

side, it looks quite like a frosted christmas tree.

Although I've experimented with enhancing the shape with photoshop

(with varying degrees of success -- I wouldn't claim to be an expert

user), this is the original version.

Is it interesting enough, purely because of the reinterpretation?

What do people think about such 'discoveries', in general?

  3. Apart from have a film camera on hand?

Unfortunately I don't think the original has the resolution to play

with much cropping, and I feel as if it needs quite a bit of context

    anyway.

I'd love to hear some opinions...
