I think the placement of the sun is just fine.
This photo has a wonderful look with an unposed natural spontaneity. I think it would lose that quality if you overthink the composition for a reshoot.

Overall a nice picture, but i'm a bit bothered by the "inward leaning" look of the building brought out by the lens distortion. I'll attach an example of a remedy. I realize that perspective control can be subjective and controversial, but i simply believe that buildings such as this look straighter, taller, and more dramatic when perspective is properly controlled.

Thanks for your comment, John. I'm glad you noticed this because to tell the truth i never gave it any thought whatsoever. Now i'm intrigued! The stump was actually there, i didn't move it (i'm too lazy to heft that thing out there). Although i'm not sure how it got there (it certainly didn't grow there). This was the shore of a reservior lake/park, so it may have been placed by someone else, or might it have drifted there? From where? The mystery deepens...

I like this photo for its elegant simple lines. I really don't see anything wrong that cropping would fix.

Nice colors. I'm torn on whether to suggest cropping the bottom away or not. I think it would improve the composition by emphasizing the harbor more, but there are lovely reddish brown colors down there which make a nice contrast to the turquoise water.

Nicely exposed photograph that brings out the lovely tones in the building beyond the bridge. I'm a bit bothered by the structures position smack dab in the vertical center of the frame. I think cropping some of the bottom water out would improve the picture (the sky is more interesting IMHO).

Nyahh the pig was just resting in the middle of a hot day. My friend picked up its ear to pose it for a shot. It didn't seem to mind.

I like the tones and basic composition of this photo, but it still
feels like it's missing the mark. I'd like to know what others think
of it: like it, hate it, any remarks on tonality and composition
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is a beautiful moment captured, congratulations! The image is very close to 5x7 aspect ratio. I think it should be more square for maximum impact--perhaps 8x10 aspect ratio, or fully square. I've attached an example of a square crop.

where does the rainbow come from and why does it end at the edge of the hill?
Observing rainbows depends on the angle between you & the sun w.r.t the water droplets (mist) that reflect and refract the sun's light. The rainbow's abrupt cut-off by the hill could simply indicate that the mist is behind the mountain, not in front.
Check out this site for more rainbow info:

IMHO, the bottom 1/3 (where the smooth water gives way to the dark rocks area) should be cropped away. This picture is crying out for a panoramic aspect ratio. I think the dark bottom area with rocks strewn about randomly is visually uninteresting and serves only to distract from the beautiful colors & zones above it.

I like this photo very much. You captured the moment perfectly, and the composition is great. I think it could tolerate some cropping of the top, but not too much. The only other comment I have is that the pants of a person in front of the trio (to the left of the child's head) are somewhat distracting. Although there's nothing you could've done about it at the time, I wonder if it would improve the composition to subdue or remove it digitally.

I like it! Lovely muted tones, and an interesting use of negative space. I especially like the way the water smoothly fades into the mist with no discernable boundary between them.

The SLR in the projected picture appears reversed. Either that or it may be one of an exceedingly rare species of left-handed SLRs ;)
I think the photo itself is intriguing & moody. I like the lighting and tones and the contrast of the woman photographer's intense expression vs the sitting photographer's more relaxed (or melencholy?) expression.
I'm not sure if I like the wall socket on her cheek though. The composition might be stronger without it.

The intensity of the boy's gaze and the nervous innocence look on the chick make this really special. The lighting and focus is perfect. I have a minor comment about the tilted background lines. I think leveling them by rotating and cropping slightly would better direct the "energy" flow. Right now the chick is "uphill" from the boy and the energy flows from the chick to the boy. If you straighten the lines, then the energy flows from the boy to the chick. I prefer the latter. This is a minor comment and I am probably not explaining my aesthetic sense in the best way, so take it FWIW.

I agree with you 100%, this does have a lovely impressionistic look. You might even try adding some slight brushstroke texture in an image editing program to enhance the effect.

The black background and rim lighting are very eye-catching and the composition is wonderful. However, the skin tones are really flat and unattractive. I suspect the subjects are really dark in the original and a CCD scanner may not have been able to get all the tonal info there (this has happened on some of my B&W negs with my ss4000 scanner). You might try getting a professional drum scan, or a professional print made. If there is any way to get better skin tones on this image i think it would be well worth it.

Although well exposed, the composition isn't very captivating. The people are also distracting. I think a different angle with less people would make a better photograph. Perhaps a better picture might be a closeup of some of the dwellings details (maybe even with a strategically placed tourist or two).
You have some much better pictures in your portfolio: cliff dwelling 2,3, mountain lovers, pike's peak, might rocky 1,2.

I think this is a beautiful picture. The tones & gradations are perfect. I'm wondering if the child could be placed somewhere else to affect the composition, but i'm not sure if it could get any better than it already is.

I had a hard time scanning and color-balancing this photo. I'd like
to know what others think of it. Any comments on colors, contrast,
composition, etc... Thanks.

I think this is wonderful. I cannot think of how to improve on it. I'm curious if this was a grab shot, considering that the Rollei seems like a pretty hefty camera.

I really love the light & shadow patterns combined with the repeating arch in receding perspective. As a minor comment, I think i'd prefer a bit less foreground and a bit more of the wall on the top.
I would like to see this photograph in full black and white or perhaps in duotone. The partial coloration on the left side only is interesting, but i believe it detracts from the overall impact of the patterns and lines that make this photograph really special.

I agree with Sam above, the "partial destaturation to add emphasis" is getting very overdone and tiresome. HOWEVER, it really works well here. This actually made me get up out of my chair and go for a cold drink (albeit non-alcholic, i'm at work!).
very well done!

A beautiful dusk landscape. I think the colors & composition are wonderful. It is a bit grainy however, most likely due to the 200 speed film. Slower more fine-grained film would probably have forced you to use a tripod.
There are a couple of blotches in the sky just right of the center that are distracting. These can/should easily be fixed w/photoshop.
