You guys are too funny - no, not pushing the kid into Canon, if he went with Nikon, he could 'maybe' borrow my stuff. Just dealing with everything from a price point and what he thinks he wants. The T2i with either the 18-55/55-200 or the 18-135 seems like it could be best, from what he wants to pay for a DSLR kit. I just don't know about the quality of any of this gear. It's Canon, so I'm sure it equals Nikon somehow. Guess I was asking about the quality of what he's looking at as well. Thanks!

My son loves my D90, and wants a quality digital camera. He likes shooting flowers, landscapes, a little action photography, but not much. He's looking at two Canon T2i outfits, one with the 18-55/70-300 and another with the 18-135, as well as the G12 and G1x. I honestly don't know what to tell him, other than point him to the features and see how the cameras feel in hand, I'm a Nikon shooter! Help!
Thanks for anyone offering information - he'll read this and it should help.

Matt - so sorry, my scaling was off and that was my fault. Trying to post again, Sorry, I screwed up. Wished I had a dollar for everytime that happened.

Again, I truly wished I had the time and the equipment. I come here every Wednesday just to see what other eye's have seen, and I am never disappointed. It's just a dandilion, but I hope you enjoy it.

This a great thread, with many thoughtful, intelligent posts. I've been an avid photographer since the late 1960's. A couple of decades ago (the 1990's), I made enough money to buy what I wanted, not only photographically, but high end guitars. When I started to sell off my film gear, I sold my Nikon outfit, 2 F5's, N90s, 5 ED-IF lenses, 2 SB-26's, My Canon outfit, an EOS-1N with motor, Elan 7E with grip, 5 Canon L lenses, My Contax RX with 3 Zeiss lenses (miss the 85 1.4 German), and my Hassy outfit, 2 501's, 4 backs, 4 lenses, 3 finders. I got to the point going out for photography was nuts. Packing it all up, what lens, what film, this & that, you name it. I wound up owning it for almost nothing more than bragging rights because my job kept me wrapped up for 60-75 hrs/week. Same with the multiple Lowden's, Collings, Santa Cruz' and other instruments. Today, less money, more relaxed, 1 DSLR and a couple of lenses. I'll add some gear when I feel the time's right and I'm going to actually use it. And I'll more than likely buy used. All of these things are toys - nothing more. Never needed them, just wanted them. Today, financial management is more important, and I don't shoot for anyone but me. I think my point is, if you can afford the toy and want it, buy it, if you can justify it. If not, step back and think about it for a while. The gear will still be there.

Wow, too many great photos today. Too many of you have the time on your hands for this, wish I did. Jeannean and
Roberta D, the butterfly photos are nothing short of beautiful, great work. This is just some pansies still alive, and thought I'd get a shot of them before the inevitable comes.

Without commenting specifically about the attributes of either the D800 or D4, no question, it would be a blast to use either camera, but I'm still shooting with a D90 and my budget allows for neither newer camera. I'm pretty darn sure I haven't hit the limit of what the D90 is capable of without improvement on my part and a more consistent technique, I wouldn't benefit from either camera. Can't blame the tool here.
I did, however, get a chuckle from Mr.Rockwell alluding to the 'idea' that the D800 may eliminate the need for telephoto lenses - just crop your way to that 300mm. It will be interesting to see pictures from these two cameras in capable hands.

By the spec's, I'd love a D4 (or even a D3s), but at 6k? Doesn't mesh with my wallet, and regardless, for anyone who's seen my pics on Nikon Wednesdays can tell, I haven't exploited/mastered my lowly D90 yet. Wished I had that kind of cash, but I'd probably buy more lenses.
