  1. Heheh... I know, I know about the mouthpiece position- trouble is, when I was working on the shot layout, it totally ruined the symmetry of the shot when I put the horn in proper playing position. I guess I really liked how the round part of the horn sort of mirrored the round buttocks-area and how there was a pretty clean diamond-shape to the subject area... although I can also see why the pose bothers the musically-inclined. Ahh well... can't win 'em all! Guess that's why I'm a music school FLUNKIE! ;)
  2. The actual portage for this area was impassible due to many fallen trees, and the area in front of the canoe was supposed to have been a semi-navigable river (I'd been on this route several times before), but the droughts that year had left several major sections of our route in pretty rough shape. The riverbed area was still pretty mushy and filled with sharp rocks and fallen trees, making a tradional portage of the canoe pretty tricky, not to mention possibly dangerous, so we ended up pretty-much dragging our canoe through this area, which was about 1/2 mile in length. We thought it would never end!
  3. Tom-

I like the idea that you're trying to show with this picture, BUT the contrast (or lack thereof) bothers me a bit. I've looked at your other images, so I know that you've taken shots with great contrast, but this seems to be too many shades of grey (and no true black or true white), which to me sort of spoils a *black and white* image. I do like the feeling of solitude and tranquility I get from looking at this image, but I really think that having sharper contrast would make the boat stand out more against the mass of water.

  4. Hello! I'm a fairly new member, and was just looking for any

tips/advice/constructive criticism that the forum might offer for

this photo, one of the first I'd taken giving any sort of thought to

composition. Thanks in advance! Jessica J.

  5. I like how the colors of the rainbow seem to really bring out the red of the tower against the dark sky... BUT it just seems like the pier is distracting. Perhaps it should have taken up a bit less of the picture? A little of it as a leading line is nice, but it almost draws too much attention as it stands. Great coloring though in the rest though.

I've been canoeing on this very lake! Looking at your photo reminds me so much of the tranquility and solitude of the Boundary Waters area. I love the lighting, and the positioning of the subject makes me want to be with him, to see what lies just ahead of him. One of the best BWCA photos I have seen lately! Thanks for sharing it!
  6. I like the coloring, but I do thing the composition needs to be a bit more... relaxed, I guess. If I were taking the shot, I would have done a horizontal approach, and not used the rule of thirds so sharply. Focus on the subject- not just the great mass of water. To me (amateur though I am), the golden colors say "lazy day". The layout is just too sharp for the message I get from everything else...
