  4. In a strategic position, Genazzano rises, immersed in a landscape characterized by chestnut and olive groves. The town's name probably derives from the gens Genucia, owner of a fundus Genucianus on the territory, a place chosen by many Romans of the patrician families for their holiday (Claudio Tiberio). Since the tenth century (document of 1022) the existence of a small residential area is testified: the construction of the first churches of Saints Stephen and Lawrence (today Santa Croce) and Santa Maria dates back to this period. In 1151 Pope Eugene III ceded the fief of Genazzano to the Colonna until the beginning of the nineteenth century. The period of greatest prestige was reached by the country following the election as Pontiff of Oddone Colonna, who took the name of Pope Martin V (1417-1431) and who, according to tradition, was born in the ancient castle Colonna. In 1503, he ennobled the name of Genazzano: during the Spanish-French war, in which the troops of the Colonna also participated, in Barletta, 13 Italians fought against as many French in the famous "challenge", caused by the offenses brought by the French captain Charles de Torgues, called La Motte, to the Italian knights in a cellar of the town. Among the Italians was distinguished for his courage Giovanni Brancalone de Carlonibus, called Brancaleone, who lived and died in Genazzano. The Italians defeated the French soldiers easily.

  11. The history of Torre Astura spans centuries and different eras, from the time of Cicero to the present day. The tower is one of the various fortifications of the Lazio coast, 10 km from the town of Nettuno, part of the metropolitan city of Rome, but for its characteristics and peculiarities it really represents a unicum of its kind. History of Torre Astura: Roman era I century BC The history of the fortress and its tower dates back to the first century BC the century of Cicero; it is thought that at that time the fortress was part of the village on the aforementioned Via Severiana, which connected the city of Portus with Terracina. The castle of Torre Astura, still visible today, was then made up of two parts, joined together by a bridge. One part on the mainland, and another island, located on an artificial island. The description of the place is partly thanks to the writings of Cicero, which suggest that he had lived in that castle, then later modified.

  19. Rocca Calascio, a small fraction of the Abruzzo town of Calascio, is an ancient but fascinating village of medieval origins that stands on a hill at 1460 meters above sea level. Located about three kilometers from the town of Calascio, Rocca Calascio houses a fortress that was built around the twelfth century in a strategic position that allowed you to control the valleys of Abruzzo. This place, in fact, was a crucial military observation point that allowed to spot any enemy attacks and was also in communication with the other watchtowers in the area.
