Brian, I'm really glad you turned off the rating names--perhaps this will encourage some honest ratings. Over the past year, there's certainly been some very cliquish rating going on, along with the rampant rating inflation.
I think it would be nice to take away the photographer's name for the first 3 days, too! The top-rated pages would look quite a bit different!

Jeff, thanks for your suggestions. The hotel you uploaded looks very nice--it's good a possibility.
David, thanks for all of your information. I have a few cases of Gigondas in my wine cellar, so I'm definitely headed that direction. Also, the two gorges are awfully intriguing. I also checked out your websit--very nice work. Thanks again for all of the info!!

I'm travelling with my family (wife and children--twins age 9) to
France for two weeks in the middle of June. We'll probably spend 4
days in Paris and about 10 days in Provence. My wife and I have been
to Paris three times before (this our 11th trip to Europe), so we
know our way around fairly well. After leaving Paris, we'll be
traveling by rental car. We were thinking of staying in the
Carcassonne and Avignon areas--we've stayed at the beach areas
before and don't want to do that again.
I'm looking for suggestions about interesting places to visit and
photograph (especially off-the-beaten path types), restaurants,
wineries, museums, architecture--anything you thought was unusual or
exceptional. In terms of photography, I travel with three cameras (I
know, it's excessive, but I've got a strong back): a Canon 10D with
75-300, 50, and 20mm lenses, Hasselblad 501, and an Xpan. I make my
wife take my Leica, which she won't use. I usually photograph in
the early morning while the family sleeps in and late afternoon
while they rest. Fortunately, I don't get tired!
I'm also interested in suggestions of places to stay: we prefer b&b
type places (must be reasonably clean--gentle decay ok) in older
buildings/homes. We both speak some French, so that's not an issue.
Thanks for any suggestions.

user "screen saver" portfolio disables the viewing of photographs.
After going to his/her page, one can no longer view anyone's
photographs.

Is the top-rated photos no longer being updated? I've noticed that
today the top-rated pages aren't being updated. Is that part of the
system down?
-
Thanks everyone for the responses. Looking forward to trying out several of your restaurant choices, as well as hiking and photographic possibilities.
Mark, I checked out your website--you've got some fantastic landscapes!

I'm travelling for a week with my family (wife and 9-year-old twins)
to Las Vegas. We plan to spend some time in Vegas--we're not really
gamblers--but we also plan to go to Death Valley, Bryce Canyon (plan
to spend a night in Utah), and Grand Canyon.
I like to shoot mostly landscapes in black and white (Hasselblad) and
some abstract/macro stuff (usually with Canon 10D). I'm sure I'll
shoot a some Vegas shots a night just for the hell of it.
We're really interested in unusual spots, interesting places, and
good restaurants that are a little off the beaten path. We prefer to
wander around without a lot tourists, though, obviously, this isn't
possible in some of these parks. We also realize it's going to be
hot, so we'll try to do some stuff early in the day. In general,
we're fairly hardy and like to hike, but we'll be in a rent-a-car, so
really rough roads are out.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Brian, it looks as if all this rating stuff's getting you a bit testy! Go out take a few photos and keep up the good work.
-
Thanks for the advice, Bill. So far four driving trips in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and only one really stupid move (and I've been driving sticks)! But that's always good advice!
-
I'm leaving for Ireland late Tuesday afternoon for two weeks. Our
B&B's will be in Dublin, Kilkenny (spelling), Limerick, Galway, and
Sligo. My family (me, wife, and 8-year-old twins) will be motoring
around the countryside, wasting fossil fuel and scaring the locals
with my driving.
Any input you might have on out-of-the-way and unusual places to
photograph and visit would be greatly appreciated. Also any
suggestions about pubs and restaurants is also of interest. I've
read several guidebooks, but I've gotten several very good
suggestions from photo.net members on previous trips.
For gear, I'll be bringing a Canon EOS system with two bodies, one
for black and white and one with slide film. Also will be bringing
along a Hasselblad for when the mood strikes--usually will shoot
black and white. In general I like to shoot scenics and architecture.
Thanks for any help.

I have finally receieved my Durst Laborator 1000 enlarger and put it together. Fortunately it arrived in excellent condition. I made a few prints last night and everthing seems to be working exceptionally well.
Thanks for all of your previous responses. I have obtained a manual for the beast--everything was pretty self-explanatory, but it's nice to have.
The enlarger came with a 6x6 negative carrier--any ideas on where to pick up a few other sizes? Also, to do 4x5 prints, would the best idea be to pick up some anti-Newton glass and make a sandwich?
Thanks for any suggestions.
-
Yes, this should have said Durst Laborator 1000, not 100!
-
I just purchased a inexpensive Durst Laborator 100 enlarger with a
color head. It didn't come with manual--does anyone know where one
might be available?
I was looking to buy a 4x5 b&w set-up, but this wasn't much more
than the Beseler that I was looking at. Also, this is in nearly new
condition--another film shooter bit the dust.
Any suggestions about manuals or helpful tidbits of information
would be appreciated. I currently use a decidedly low-tech 6x7
enlarger. Thanks.

I'm sure this is a heretical question on this forum, but I'm
thinking about selling my Voigtlander L and Leica CL on that
unmentionable auction site and buying a new Voigtlander R2. Is this
foolish? I currently use a VC 15mm and 25mm, and Summicron 40mm.
Perhaps I should just get rid of the Voigtlander L. I have too many
cameras and feel I need to consolidate my holdings. The only reason
I'm considering this is that the Voigtlander is a more user friendly
camera, where the Leica seems to be much better built. Opinions??
And one further question--how many of you spell Voigtlander
Voightlander? I have a hard time leaving that "h" out!!
-
Thanks everyone. I feel little stupid here. I pressed down and the film speed moved easily!!
Thanks again,
Bob

I'm looking at a used Leica CL and can't change the film speed
setting. I'm not familiar with Leica's, but it seems like it should
just turn. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any input.
-
Thanks again for all of the responses. I ended up buying a used Tachihara with a Fujinon 135 lens in a Copal 0 shutter. Good condition, decent price. It should do the job for me.
-
I should have also said I shoot mostly outdoors, mostly landscapes, mostly black and white. I'd probably like to take the camera on short hikes (less than 5 miles). I do have a strong back.
-
Does anyone have any experience using the Burke and James 4x5 metal
field camera? I'm thinking about buying one and I'd welcome anyone's
opinion. Other options include some of the lower price wooden field
cameras.
Thanks for your help.
-
Thanks for all of the useful posts. I've decided against buying a monorail--I was probably just going that way because it was so cheap. I'm also shying away from the inexpensive Toyo field. That leaves me with several choices--a relatively inexpensive wooden field camera or and older metal field camera. I hope to buy something in the next few weeks.
Thanks again.
Smart move !
