pnital 36 Posted May 14, 2009 A different kind of a human hug...... Belongs to the series "Life as a dance" . Thanks for your thoughts. Link to comment
Donna Stavis 0 Posted May 14, 2009 Interesting concept. I like the blur, which certainly takes this out of the realm of anything individualized and places it in more ambiguous territory; the lack of background context and plays into this. The smaller person loks in trouble -- limp for whatever reason -- weak, and the larger one supportive yet resigned. I write this because there's a feel of looking at the skeleton of the smaller figure, almost projecting death, which some other of your later work touches upon. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted May 15, 2009 Thanks! you have well felt and written you impressions and thoughts. Yes,it is a metaphor of death and memories.Death and memories are part of human being and existence, they manifest themselves by language , gesture, prayers, and ceremonies.( as well as in the arts) I think that in this work( that was photographed last year and just now I have had the strength to upload it, and it is still hard to explain....) the metaphor of death hinted by the head and spinal cord, while the hug hints of memories. It is my individual way of expression ,but the lack of background, contexts and place, its ambiguity , creates I think, the general metaphor. It is not an easy photo . I thought a lot lately of how close combined it can be, the genocide of the past and threatening of future. You are right that it has a connection to a part of my work we were discussing lately. adan1 0 Posted May 15, 2009 The application of the blur effect helps to "hide" the woman's body so that we can focus on her head. I am intrigued by the way that the man holds her with such strength and tenderness - the way that you hold on to something very dear to you. The way that her head tilts seems so lifeless, almost dead. Your interpretation of holding to memories is right on and that is what is suggested here. Link to comment
michaellinder 16,613 Posted May 15, 2009 I did not identify the woman until the second or third time I looked at this photograph. In fact, initially, I thought the subject was hugging a blanket or pillow or . . . a mirror image of himself. Then it struck me that he is gazing intently into the woman's face, trying to console her and, by doing so, trying to make sense out of the pain they seem to share. This is a masterpiece of human emotion. Shabbat Shalom! michael Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted May 16, 2009 Adan, and Michael, nice to see you here, your interpretation shows me that the blur creates differences in seeing the scene, and it is interesting ( as the lower head belongs to the man dancer, the hug , to a man and a woman dancer behind, not visible really as a third dancer ....( see the head "cut" of the "hugger" , Very complicated;-)) B.C and Jorg, thanks for your comments. Lionel, what a surprise! I will email you. Bob, nice to see you , welcome back. Link to comment

gordonjb 10,860 Posted May 17, 2009 The way in which the lighting conspires with the blur to highlight the mans muscular arms and accentuate the embrace at the same time as it obscures much of the woman, gives rise in my mind to a coming together, a merger of the two into one. The emotional aspect seems open ended. I can see this as either a sinister and forceful clutching or a mutual embrace. My initial response was more the former than the latter. The B&W is a good choice here and I think the rendering and exposure are well handled, we have lots of nice tonal gradations. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted May 17, 2009 Emma and Ali, thanks to both of you for your feedback Gord, thanks for your interesting commentary, I saw it as a window to human life , as a dance fraction that hints of human life occurrences The slow shutter with the blur general result, translated (to me) as death and memories. I kept It for quite sometime till I decided to upload it, as it is not an easy one to understand the emotion it expresses. I appreciate very much your writing about your feelings and interpretation. And the B/W conversion...;-)) Link to comment
fabrizio_r 0 Posted May 17, 2009 A very good moviment shot with a large b/w tones, almost an abstract, a powerful image Pnina Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted May 17, 2009 Very nice indeed, Pnina, two lovers in apparition. For some reason this reminds me of birth or perhaps Eve emerging from Adam. It seems almost allegorical. Link to comment

jeffl7 0 Posted June 17, 2009 I've missed a lot of great ones. I like how this integrates angst, longing, and connection all at once. The blur adds considerably, giving a sense of fluidity. Link to comment
