As if this weren't a great photo because of your subject matter, your framing and what you got in frame, the DOF, POV, the subtle contrast - but also - and perhaps the most contributing factor - getting a moving animal to look directly into your lens! Amazing.

5 woofs!

Dan;

Thanks for stopping by I am always grateful to check in and find one of your comments. I love shooting with the 70 - 200 fairly wide open. It leaves little room for error but in those lucky shots when you get the focus nailed it give sweet results.

Alberta;

What a lovely surprise to find you dropping in on PN. I have missed you, the place is not the same without your warmth , your insightful comments and your wonderful photography. I understand that you are busy so I can only hope that you find time to post a few recent photos. I have often wondered what you might be getting yourself up to these days.

These little critters were an absolute hoot to photograph. As you surmised this character was heading straight for me. Given half a chance he would have happily chewed on my camera. The world is so new to them and everything gets tested with those little needle teeth.

Hi Els;

Thanks for the kind words which are especially meaningful coming from you with all of the creatures you photograph.

It looks like he is running toward you, there is an eye connection between both of you which is very beautiful. He looks like the creature that you want to wrap up and hug.... so sweet. I like the BG that hints that he has siblings ... and your composition is as usual so well processed ( white on white ! ).

Welcome back Alberta.!

Great picture Gord!

Glad to read these are a friend's dogs - at first view of the image, I thought you fell off the deep end and got two more dogs!

Pnina;

These pups were running everywhere. With ten of them on the loose and mother it was a challenge to not get run over :-).

Thanks Kirk.

No worries, the deep end is never far away but so far I've not gone off.

I am sure that Darwin and Maggie would not be pleased to see any new puppies crowding their turf.

I think this is at least the third or fourth time I've looked at this photograph. Every time I look at it, I just sort of sit and stare at it for minutes at a time. I'm transfixed by the look in this puppy's eyes and the facial expression. This has a strong emotional impact on me.

You're one of only a handful of photographers I know who can achieve this level of purity in their black and white work. I don't know how you do this, Gordon.

Coming from someone whose work I admire as much as yours, that's one helluva a compliment and I thank you for it.

I was fortunate that my friend gave me a call to come over on the very first occasion these pups got to run around and explore in the outdoors. I think that has a lot to do with this little guys expression, which incidentally is my favorite aspect of this photo. The pups seemed to have the excitement of all this newness inextricably tied up with their trepidation at being this far away from mom and away from the comforts of their nice safe puppy room in the house. This made for some funny moments a few of which I was lucky enough to capture.

Expression is evident from the black and white work to the poignant focusing to the faces and eyes to the echo from one to the next. It's an elevating photo, something innocent captured and expressed with a sophisticated visual depth.

Thanks and kind regards back to you.

glad you liked this thanks for the comment.

Fred;

You always cut to the heart of matters. The expression and the visual connection were the motivation to single out this frame from the days shoot to work on.

Such a sweet and tender portrait; he looks like he is coming straight over to you for a big hug! I love all your animal photos; you are great at capturing their personalities and mind-sets. Please keep shooting, you are very gifted! :)
