laurentlacoste 0 Posted August 29, 2008 What a winner, David! Gorgeous, really. The compo is just perfect as well as the angle. Not so easy to find the right angle for that kind of shot. I appreciate the fact that you assert the bar and its signs and colors as the main subject and at the same time let us have a sightseeing glance of the Nevada desert and mountains in the background. Another classic. I love the tones and processing. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 29, 2008 Thanks. In the background is Ely, Nevada. My guess is that this place being located where it is, might have been a bit of a rogue operation. A place where maybe the laws were stretched a bit. I love that club 50 sign compared to the more modern billboard leading us to town. Link to comment
maggies 0 Posted August 29, 2008 Very well done...looks like 3D...They offer alot of amenities here...how were the drinks?...Marjorie Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 29, 2008 I didn't eat the food, just sampled the wares in the brothel. JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like it might have been a cool old roadhouse in its day. Link to comment
dandem 1 Posted August 29, 2008 Fantastic shot, Dave. The colours and composition are awesome. Very well done. Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted August 30, 2008 Someday you're going to have to explain to me how you get that super saturted color in your pictures. I really like it but I can never manage to get an effect anything like what you have here. Those orange signs are great, they really pop out. I may not like them in person but as design elements in a photo they're terrific. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 30, 2008 Thanks. I tend to overdo color. I keep thinking when I grow up, I'll be able to curb my excesses. So far no luck. Link to comment
dmo_galleries_chicago_phot 0 Posted August 30, 2008 Great find. I like the bright orange in combination with the bright white of the wall and the border of the sign. Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted August 30, 2008 It's hard to find a full-service joint like this. Like Jack, I enjoy immensely how you manage color. Old photos fade, but old memories seem supersaturated like this. You truly have an eye for these fading scenes. Link to comment
timkeller 0 Posted August 30, 2008 Makes me want to go drive in one direction for days on end. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 30, 2008 Be careful in your choice of words. Remember this is Nevada, and a place like this might have been "full service" indeed. I do love the colors presented in this tableau. Those window frames and signs just get me excited. My only regret is that I could see no way to get inside. Link to comment
tonmestrom 4 Posted August 30, 2008 for a Dutchie like me this looks almost iconic and every bit American(a). I do love those colours as well. While you have Nevada, we have a whole country of "full service" Still, it seems I have to wait another year and a half before I can get into this place. I'm still wet behind the ears it seems. bosshogg 4 Posted August 30, 2008 Ah, yes, although I've never been there, and would most likely not be allowed to enter one of the Dutch "full service" facilities, I've often admired your country's ability to recognize and act upon reality, without the fog of religion dominating over reason. Does that mean you are headed this way in a year and a half. Email me if you are going to be in the vicinity. Link to comment
tonmestrom 4 Posted August 30, 2008 actually it was a reference on that 50 sign. I'm 48 hence the remark Still, it could be that I have to attend a congress next year, I think in Boston, for a week. If I do I will surely stay longer. I sure would like to meet some of you guys, you amongst them. Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted August 30, 2008 This would be the first time that I've seen 'yellow CAUTION tape' used in this manner. I guessing it was hung in this way so the those who could not see the barbed wire would maybe get the idea that the yellow tape was tied to something. Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted August 31, 2008 Too bad you couldn't see inside, but these full-service joints often black out the windows. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted September 1, 2008 Or maybe it was just a means of dealing with the crowds that showed up for the "full service." You know, like keeping the queue in line. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted September 1, 2008 No I didn't know, but I defer to your obviously superior knowledge of these "full service" type places. Link to comment
laurent_jaussi 0 Posted September 2, 2008 the side light is really nice in getting every part a nice share of illumination....then a compo that give the main upper sign the first role while assisted by the second roles companion signs...everyone play its partition without false note (and firstly the photographer)....a very nice documentary David.... godfather 0 Posted September 2, 2008 The first thing i noticed was the great composition. The second was the truely great color world. Even when it looks rather real i believe it has been altered a little colder than it was when it came from the camera, am i completely wrong? Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted September 2, 2008 Thanks for you appreciation. I'm rather pleased with the outcome considering at the time I feared it was not going to work. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted September 2, 2008 Yes, there was more of a yellowish cast from the early morning sun, and I did take some out because I wanted to emphasize the red part of the image, which I think is the interesting connection between large billboard, the bar and cafe sign, the window trim and the club 50 sign. I've also been having some issues with my monitor, and have recently tried to calibrate it, but seem to be having some problems accomplishing a setting that stays from one day to the next. Sometimes I feel like I am not seeing the same things you guys are on Pnet. Link to comment
