Hi Dave: A very good first attempt (although I think you're hustling us :) The only suggestion I can offer is to maybe crop the crossbeam at the bottom of the frame. It think it might be unnecessary and a little distracting. The texture of the wood is well captured here and the different angles and directions give the photo great interest and add dimension. Good job!

No, really! Well, the first B&W since I stopped shooting b&w film 30 some years ago. I thought about that bottom beam but decided to keep it. For me it kind of anchors the photo and I wanted closure on the window rather than have it open at the bottom of the picture.

I can see what you're talking about, though. I think there are two sources of instability: the verticals in front of it on the left and the fact that it's lighter on the right than the left. One or both of these make one wonder whether it's really horizontal (which it is) and I think maybe that's what's distracting you--yes?

I just played with it, trying out different crops--I think I'll stick with this.

Great B&W, I agree with you about the beam, it is necessary. I'd like to see this as a duo or tritone with some added greys.

Thanks for the comment, Steve! Unfortunately, I have to admit I know nothing about duotone--much less tritone. I'll put it on the (very long) list of things I need to research and and maybe even learn how to do.

You shouldn't feel obligated to attempt an explanation but if you can point me in the direction of helpful on line references or resources for dummies, I'd appreciate it.
