Alberta, I think it's probably a red tailed hawk. Get yourself a copy of the Peterson Field Guide, Eastern Birds. It's a big help.

Maybe we'll run into one another at Lowry Park.

I use the Audubon guides but thanks for the recommendation. While we have had red shouldered hawk in our neighborhood, I ruled that out because of the coloration at the juncture of the wing and body. On the hawk, that would be solid red at the top, going into the brown/white pattern about midway down and at an angle. Also, the beak was not yellow - at least I don't think it was. The pole's pretty tall and I'm vertically challenged :) See you at the park - when it gets just a bit cooler. I must see and feed the penguins! Cheers -

Alberta, I identify ospreys from the head. Please take a look at my animal shots (especially the orang) in my portfolio. All at Lowry. Comments would be welcome.

Definitely not osprey or kestrel. With the long tail I would guess a coopers hawk, hard to tell from the one view. Couldn't rule out broadwing though.

I agree. In the time since I posted this I've looked at hundreds of photos and think this may be a hawk. Can't ask him. May never know :) Cheers -
