AHH YES !!! I remember buying gas at 18.9 @ gal. Gas wars price @16.9, but that was then! Best to you and thanks for the look back, Al

Thanks. I, too, am old enough to remember when these venerable names were ubiquitous and gas was 15 cent a gallon.

I almost said something about the lack of wires being a reason that I liked the image, but I decided to play nice for once.

I think when I started driving, it was already all the way up to 29 cents a gallon. Anyway, those days are far, far behind me. But this photo is nostalgic and works on a couple of levels. It very appropriately reminds me of road trips. This is what you saw from the car as you were riding somewhere adventurous. Keep in mind, I grew up in NYC where we didn't have a whole lot of open space or outdoor adventures! So it's a great visual and it conjures up memories related to itself, car trips driven by the gas these signs represent. The colors, of course, appropriate to this week's holiday, just give it that classic American feel. Probably a blue sky would have been a nice backdrop, but I suppose you worked with the hand that was dealt you!

Thanks again for your comments. It was raining when I took this photo, and barely daylight. So blue sky would only be possible with some serious manipulation, and I'm not in to doing that.

I think the image is evocative, and can be viewed on several levels. Nostalgia is certainly one level and good enough on its own. But on another level, from a purely personal standpoint, I see a metaphor for our industry, our infrastructure, and maybe even our national will. In some cases this is all that's left---a few remnants as reminders.

Really nice shot, David. You've got the eye to see the iconic possibilities of these signs while all the rest of us drive on by unless we happen to need gas.
