birds Heron takes a Snake

I never realized how big a snake this bird could capture.

Capture is one thing, swallowing it another but I guess this heron managed that too. Picture? Regards, Dieter

Yes - it swallowed the snake. It's interesting to watch. First the bird grabs the snake anywhere on its body. Then it works to get the head in its mouth following which it swallows it (the snake is not a willing participant in this activity). For a while the bird shows a sizable bulge in its throat but eventually the bulge, and the snake, disappears.

How unusual. I hope you'll post more shots from this scene.

I have posted others before of herons eating snakes (see my file called Birds). Usually, I see them eating in their nests and I think that the snakes are dead at that point. This scene is the first time I've seen the capture taking place.
