This conjures up for me visions of having driven a long distance in an old car, finally arriving in the promised land of sunny California and staying in a place like this. My family took very few trips when I was a kid, but I recall the excitement I felt at staying in a motel, even as dark and drab as many of them were.

Nice picture.

This is a worthy relic to capture for sure. What's with the barb wire. You can check-in but you can't check-out? I have to say David I think this sign is good enough you may want to try going back at some other times of day and see what she has to offer. Very cool find. One of the more majestic vintage neons I've seen.

Doug, I know exactly what you are talking about. We were lower middle class growing up, but every three years or so we were all loaded up into the family car and ventured forth from the midwest to see grandparents in California, and the grandeur of America. Much of Route 66 was covered on these trips, and the memories are priceless. We stayed in all kinds of motels, and some of them were not the best, but they were all a fascinating new world for us naive midwestern kids to excitedly explore. They seem now, in retrospect, so much simpler, cleaner and innocent. What an illusion to harbor.

Kent, this is a mere twenty minutes from where I live, and you might be right that a different time of day would make it much more pleasing. The lighting could be more dramatic. Thanks so much for commenting. Both you and Doug have been posting some really wonderful stuff lately. I am in awe of both of you guys.

Nice sign of the past David...I like the composition...I am not sure about sharpenning (see the white lines around the power line)...Laurent.

Ah, they don't make signs like that anymore. Too bad. Really nice composition, too. I agree with Laurent about the sharpening. It's a problem I sometimes have myself in reducing the image to fit the parameters of P.Net. I'm sure in the original that white border isn't present.

You are both correct about the sharpening. I will admit that I did not sse that halo in the original, but I am not at home so that I can bring it up on the computer. But I do think that it was not as obvious, or I would not have let it go like that. On the ohter hand, I, like many others, are prone to going a bit to far with that sharpening. Thanks to both of you for the comments. They are appreciated more than you know.
