bosshogg 4 Posted November 13, 2006 I was shocked to find that this phone actually had a dial tone. As near as I can tell, nobody lives in New Idria or anywhere around it. Note the bullet hole in the phone sign. New Idria is an abandoned town that used to be owned by the New Idria Mining Company. They mined mercury. If you would like to see more of New Idria, see my presentation: http://www.photo.net/photodb/presentation?presentation_id=333566 Link to comment
cdouillette 0 Posted November 13, 2006 This is such a neat photo, I looked at your New Idria Ghost Town presentation and just loved it! Must be an interesting place to visit. I've always wanted to go to a ghost town :) thanx for sharing~ Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted November 13, 2006 Thank you very much for looking at this picture and for taking the trouble to look at my presentation. While it is kind of an environmental disaster, New Idria is a really super place for those of us who like old, abandoned and isolated places. Link to comment
john falkenstine 1 Posted November 13, 2006 Good job Steve, I remember Fairbanks, Arizona (close to Tomstone) as having a functional phone as well, even though nobody lived there anymore and the General Store had closed. Under the excellent maintenance of our own Park Service, the buildings have now decayed so bad that a protective fence had to be erected around them and the phone is gone. Link to comment
kcole 0 Posted November 17, 2006 Out here in Washingotn I often run across old phone booths, BUT I am amazed you found one that was working, you captured this scene very well, and I appreciate your time with thes project, Its been a pleasure to look through.. Cheers Cole Link to comment

susan stone 0 Posted November 19, 2006 Talk about "call waiting", this one is waiting for someone to call. I really enjoy "traveling" with you to all these neat old sites, the more delapidated the better. Wonders never cease....a dial tone! Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted November 19, 2006 And one could not ask for a better fellow traveler. Thanks. Link to comment
juan-de-santa-anna 0 Posted November 29, 2006 Hey did you ever think that this might be an outhouse instead of a phone booth? If this phone really does work...use it to call your IPO...I got your e-mail jeez fine....thinks me the problem might be out west...I sent another today...WVMM Link to comment
