This is one of those pictures that take my breath away. By the way, I have seen this scene published as a cover of a magazine. It had a slightly different angle and was taken during sunset but just as captivating as yours. There is a melancholic charm about the mood here that is so appealing. It just pulls me right into it. There are so many details that compete for one's attention - the cobblestone road leading to the river with the two people at end, the man lost in this thoughts facing across the river, the stately buildings standing pompously in front of the naked trees, the dramatic sky that enhances the melancholic mood, the lines leading to the vanishing point, etc. I could stare at it for hours.

Thanks Adan, as you might know the scene is shot on the Saint Louis island in Paris and the tower you see in far is the Saint-Jacques tower which was build in the beginning of the 16th century together with the church of the same name, which does not exist anymore. The tower has been covered since a couple of years for restoration but they are about to finish (you can see a couple of recent photos of the tower in my Paris folder). I will go back to the scene here when the tower is fully visible and redo this photo, because of the poor quality of it despite the fact, and I agree, that it conveys an impressibe atmosphere; Thanks for your comments.

Have you got the title of the book you mention ?

Sorry Anders, it is not a book. It was a British travel magazine that I came across a couple of years ago. I forgot the name of it. I think I still have the copy at my parent's home in Miami. I will try to dig it out next time I visit them.

This scene, as so numerous scenes in Paris, is the same as a century ago and only change by the models of the cars !

Anders,

Image is by Tony Stone Images. The Classic Travel Collection is published by Absolute Sports Publications Ltd and printed in the UK.

I actually think your shot has a slightly better perpsective than the one in the magazine, the lamp and the foreground cobbled road surface being more evident.  Very aesthetically pleasing image.

Well done!

Alf

I also like Anders' view.

A really nice composition and terrific color.

I'm trying to decide if the blue car is good or not. Hmmm.

The overall monochromatic effect may be relieved by that a little.

This is another I probably would have missed without the clips at the bottom of the forums.

I spend much time in Paris and your image captures perfectly the feel of walking on Île St Louis while avoiding any clichés. Notre Dame, just to the right, must have been tempting but you stayed with capturing the feeling. Nice work!
