I think if one is in a melancholy mood, it would be interpreted as quite sad in the sense of the person not being fully involved in the joy of Christmas, but, I can also see where it could simply be a person who is not engrossed in all the material aspects of shopping, clothing, etc. who just enjoys sitting and observing in wonder, awe, disgust.... dberryhill 3 Posted July 19, 2006 Dave, you have a good perspective on this. I've always viewed it sadly, as a lonely lady sitting by herself watching all the Christmas joy pass her by. But maybe it was different. I do recall that I walked around and took her picture with her facing me. She saw me and asked "Did you take my picture?", not with hostility but with amazement that someone would want to take her photo. That brought in focus for me that Christmas can be the most lonely time for those who are, as here, a little slow, or a little old, or without others in their lives. Link to comment
