Beautiful shot. The scene provides a certain, mysterious atmosphere. What is she thinking, what story lies behind.. Great job.

What film and camera, please? Such wonderful detail and lack of grain for a night shot!

Lee,

The film was the nostalgic Tri-X done in D-76, and the lens was a CV 50mm/f1.5 Nokton, on an off-brand camera..a Leica M4P...(this being the word from on HIGH by phil greenspin, who has taken COMMAND of P.N., again.)

As I will definitely qualify as one of the UNhelpful Members - maybe you should not be talking to me? (This place is feeling more and more like "Fahrenheit 451", isn't it?)

I'm SO glad it's Tri-X - BIG sigh of relief - it's my favorite b&w film, too - me and the rest of the civilized world. Anyway, did you push it and if so how far? I'm usually pushing mine 2 stops in similar conditions (NOT with a Leica, sigh - but I swear it's my boss's fault I have a Nikon, I was PERFECTLY happy with my Pentaxes...)- and at 1600 having a lot of grain, of course. I don't develop my own film, just the prints - so I'll have to ask my lab what THEY use, if you think that's what makes the difference here...

Thanks for being so HELPful...if it's any consolation, feel free to denigrate me a bit when/if you deign to respond, lol!

I don't bother to push Tri-x, just use stabilizing fluid....;-}..usually ale...but sometimes G&T....or an elderly malt. Helps to slow things down...well except for the automobile in the middle ground. I have used Diafine and Acufine in the past, and they do give a speed boost, but tone suffers to some extent. And notalgic film Nikons are fine....I have some, and they work very well under reasonably similar conditions. There are quite a few in my P.N. photos. Shot a lot of Pentax stuff also....good lenses...but Nikon has better viewfinders.

Get a tank....find some dark...take a few minutes and do your own negs...dead simple...and a lot less time than going to a store, getting waited on, going home and then going back and waiting again and going home, etc. etc....better results too.

Stabilizing fluids speed me up, so maybe that would work (good thing I have very steady hands!) I dunno, tho', I've got an N90 - and it SO wants to do everything by itself, you know! Occasionally I have to break out the K1000's to keep my focussing reflexes in shape. I'll trot around your port and check out the low light shots.

As for doing my own film, we'll see. The labs right across from work and I've not been shooting enough black and white these days to make me willing to take on a new learning curve. Besides - I've had filmreelaphobia since my college days. Thanks again! Lee

I love this image. It captures both the boredom and the excitement of the night at the same time. Not sure how two such contrary feelings can be found in the same photo. Very nice capture. This is street photography at its best.
