tm_j 30 Posted March 10, 2022 Grazie mille Giangiorgio! I am so glad to share the image of this duck (Surf Scoter) since it's so good looking and I can only see this duck a few months out of the year since it's not a local duck. This guy is a voracious clam eater (shellfish eater), he would swallow a clam whole and his gizzard will pulverize the shell and all . He's only here in the Winter since he lives mostly in Canada & Alaska and fly South with it's cold. Here's a bit of description from Wikemedia .. " The surf scoter (Melanitta perspicillata) is a large sea duck native to North America.[2] Adult males are almost entirely black with characteristic white patches on the forehead and the nape and adult females are slightly smaller and browner.[3] Surf scoters breed in Northern Canada and Alaska and winter along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America.[2] Those diving ducks mainly feed on benthic invertebrates, mussels representing an important part of their diet."
