vincentoiseau 83 Posted July 23, 2020 Hi Giangiorgio, grey herons spend serious time on preening, as shown in this beautiful image. I've seen herons take a bath in a pond. I like the lighting and composition of this photo very much. The colors are pleasing too. Kind regards, Vincent Link to comment

michaellinder 16,613 Posted July 24, 2020 Giangiorgio, I'm aware that birds preening their feathers is done for several different purposes, one of which is to rid the feathers of dirt and small inspects. I've seen this behavior quite a few times, but never by a gray heron. Its very large wingspan dictates the bird's taking quite a lot of time preening their feathers. This image is in a word - glorious. The predominance of shades of orange in the BG corresponds perfectly to the orange in the bird's beak, in a few of its feather, and its legs. I am fascinated by the direction of the neck feathers. If the bird were standing straight up, they would be hanging vertically; clearly not the case in this scene. Finally, the lighting produced significant contrast, both in color and in tone. Thanks to Google Translate - "Ottimo lavoro, amico mio." - - My best always, michael - - Ciao! Link to comment
