The masked lapwing (Vanellus miles), also known as the masked plover and often called the spur-winged plover or just plover, is a large, common and conspicuous bird native to Australia, particularly the northern and eastern parts of the continent, New Zealand and New Guinea. It spends most of its time on the ground searching for food such as insects and worms and has several distinctive calls.

Hi Sandor,

a strange mask indeed on this cousin of our vanellus vanellus! It almost looks if it has been crossbred with a turkey. Straight-on and good presentation. Kind regards, Vincent

Thank you, Vincent, for the nice comment. A strange bird indeed; the photo demonstrates why it is also called spur-winged plover. Best,- Sandor
