bernath 2 Posted June 30, 2019 The small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) tends to enter hibernation towards the autumn, during which time they are an easy target to predator attacks. Up to 50% of the population hibernating in any given area can be eaten. Those surviving can stand up to −21 degrees Celsius without freezing. Link to comment

vincentoiseau 83 Posted June 30, 2019 Hi Sandor, beautiful photo of this butterfly! You were lucky enough to have the whole body in one plane. I think this is a painted lady, not a small tortoiseshell. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanessa_cardui Kind regards, Vincent Link to comment
bernath 2 Posted July 1, 2019 Hi, Vincent. Yes, you are right, this is a painted lady. I am grateful to you for correcting it. I made quite an effort to make the photo perpendicularly to the plane of the "lady". Thanks again. Kind regards, Sandor Link to comment
