Wayne Sadler 567 Posted May 9, 2017 When the chair of an art department saw some of my watercolors, she described my work or technique as reductionism. I rushed to the dictionary to see what that meant. Relative to the field of philosophy it is the practice of analyzing and describing complex phenomena in terms of phenomena that are simpler or more fundamental. Relative to art it is distilling the subjective world into color, form, and light. Beginning with watercolor I lay down multiple washes or glazes or begin applying “paint” to canvas as the mood directs me with no plan of what I am trying to achieve. Then I begin a process of removing “paint” and waiting for the image to reveal itself. Beginning with a photograph (a predefined image) I first distort - remove lines, boundaries and merge shapes. Then I began the process of removing, masking-out that distortion until the image says it has revealed enough. With either medium the results are always surprising to me. Link to comment
