Last week I decided to visit our Peterborough Lift Lock. I was

pleased to see a couple of the Canadian Canoe Museum's Canoes

tied up along the Canal South of the Lock. I will post a few images of

the lock itself as well. Our Canadian Canoe Museum is a unique

National Heritage Centre that explores the Canoe's enduring

significance among the people's of Canada. The Museum has over

100 Canoes and Kayaks on display and is visited by Tourists the

world over. The Museum is to be relocated on the Lift Lock Site by

next summer I believe. Beautiful images of the Canoe Museum can

be seen on fellow PN Member's Gallery - Greg Pichnej - the Lift Lock

is also in Jim Downs Gallery as well as Garry Barker.

I like the framing of this shot, with the canoe and onlookers together.  It must be a fascinating place where you can see the different types of construction of these wonderful craft.

Best Regards

Gail,

I spent about an hour and a half at this museum and thought it was one of the most well done specialty museums I've ever been to. Jim

Good to know that you went there while on your visit - people have raved about the museum. Peterborough is well known for making canoes many, many years ago - local aboriginal bands are keen to keep their history alive, from the Algonquins to the Hiawatha First Nations - the canoe was a First Nations invention. The other day when I was taking images, a native man was sitting on the other side of the Canal beating on a Drum. I found it very peaceful and calming. I wish I had known you were here back then :)

There was 2 canoes from the Museum tied up along the Canal this day. The museum is located about 10 minutes away from the Lift Locks. Plans have been made to build a new Museum complex on this site, it really is so impressive and makes so much sense. The current site is not near water at all.  It should be quite magnificent.  http://www.canoemuseum.ca/museumonthemove/  The Trans Canada Trail which was initiated in 1992 to celebrate Canada's 125th year, is a series of Trails across Canada; currently 20,000 kms. is operational and it goes through Peterborough. There is a very popular Campground (Beavermead) near the Ecology Park that I love taking images at - where the trail weaves through and campers bike along the trail to the Locks. The Trail when finished will connect at least 1,000 Canadian communities, from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Artic Oceans. Finished it will be 24,000 kms. Quite often while taking pics in the Ecology Park, cyclists ask me directions and info about following the Trail to the Locks.
