B&W version of the Muley Point Pothole image. Wondering if this is more or less

engaging or interesting versus the color version? Your comments and feedback

requested and always sincerely appreciated.

David,

I really appreciate the composition with the elegant curves and texture of the rocky ground, and the unique focal point produced by the lone midground tree. The sky is not devoid of features, and the cloud patterns form a nice 'ceiling' to the ground below. Overall, very well seen and executed. I would recommend experimenting with different times of the day at this location, for this seems to be a great vantage point.

My take would be, this one is better suited in BW, but my guess is, this location at sunset would be gorgeous to shoot in color. Just a thought.

I vastly prefer this version.  The color version certainly offers the viewer an opportunity to take in the beauty of the landscape, but it lacks the impact displayed here.  Monochrome motivates - possibly compels - the viewer to examine nooks, crannies, shapes, and textures.  Moreover, the black tones of the trees yield some more interesting reflections than the color version, in my opinion.

My best,

michael

There is a color version in the same portfolio, but I like the B&W better, too. As to sunsets, the best view is directly south, towards Monument Valley, so that makes a sunset focus 90 degrees off, but still likely worth a try. View to the west is a series of buttes and scarps. This spot is truly in the middle of Nowhere, across poor-to-bad roads, so early morning or late evening will require a remote camp out. Access from the south is via the infamous Mokey Dugway, so leave your RV behind if coming from that direction;-) As always, your kind words and encouragement are sincerely appreciated.

I'm very pleased that you like this. I prefer the B&W approach as well, though the color version has its own appeal. Thank you for once again providing kind words and encouragement.

Tom, your critique has merit, so I gave it a quick try. I like the foreground better, as it pushes the viewers' eyes more emphatically to the pool and its details. I am less enamored of how it more closely centers the horizon. I don't think I want to lose the high clouds, so it is a conundrum. I may play with it some more. Thank you for your time and interest. They are appreciated.
