The lighter patch is actually where the dark tannin stained water flows over a sand bar. 

You're right there were many possible compositions - I shot half a dozen or so, but this was my favorite.

What constructive  comments  could I add to this  image?  To add a little  yellow & red  to the  leaves. Composition is  nice.

Wonderful.  What I like about this scene is it's reality, like I'm standing there in the twilight.  Really good stuff... Mike

Compare with how my surrounding looks I can say that is very similar with what I see here this moment and is very natural as eyes can see.Visual effect of all this broken trunks is good looking in composition.
