We seem to be having a warm, wet and windy winter so far, (much to my

disappointment) but still managed to get out between the rain storms to visit this local

landmark. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Thank You!

Hi Alf, I love the water channeling through the rocks, it leads the eye right to the doorstep of the lighthouse, and you know I like that. The composition and balance is just right, and the sky with its' wispy clouds fits the scene. The horizon looks off just a smidge but that's really nitpicking and I hardly noticed. The best part of this image to me are the very good tones. A winner Alf. Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year my friend.

Best Always, Holger

The tones and textures are superb.  The seemingly warm tones of the rocks lead us right on in to the subject with a background of fluid clouds.  I can only imagine going to work and climbing out of a bobbing boat onto that narrow ladder.  For comment, I see a small shear in the water/horizon just to the bottom right of the lighthouse, an easy fix.  Thanks for sharing, it's fantastic... You lead us in slowly Alf with rich tones , flowing water, taking us all the way to the money shot but O NO! It doesn't stop there, topped with a dramatic sky you leave us wanting more....

As others have said, this is a really lovely image.  The leading lines in the foreground make for a powerful composition.  The B&W conversion is really well done.

Alf, I've been wanting to comment on this one, but did not have the time. Now everybody else has said it all. Kudos on an excellent image and the vision to catch it. What software did you use to stitch the images? I have not experienced the shear seen here when using PS-5 and correctly lapped images. Just wondering...

Sincere Thanks!

I was trying to line up the channels in the rock with the lighthouse so it is most gratifying to know that it worked : - )  You are right about the horizon, but I had already added the frame when I realised, so if I ever decide to print it I will correct it beforehand.

Thank you once again my friend and A Very Merry Christmas and Peaceful New Year to you.

It was the textures of  the rock which led me to take the shot from this particular angle and Nik Silver Efex helped to accentuate them.  I adjusted the perspective of the lighthouse in CS6 as it was leaning a bit which could explain the horizon.

Many Thanks for your thoughts and kind words, very much appreciated!

I know what you mean, it does look inviting in a "get out there and face the elements" kind of way.

Thank You!

Sincere Thanks. I used to try and apply the  principles of "Hyper Focal Distance"  using an app on my phone, but in all honesty it didn't seem to produce anything better than my own rough estimations.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and kind words.  The textures in the rock was the element that attracted me, and I was fortunate that the light was fairly flat allowing me to capture the detail.

Cheers Tony!

We are given so many explanations as to the unbelievably mild and terribly wet weather, Global Warming, the position of the "Jet Stream" and even El Meinio  but I think they are all guessing. But whatever the cause it certainly doesn't feel natural, and as winter is my favourite time of the year for photography, I also feel cheated!

Many Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts Gerald!

Many Thanks for your thoughtful feedback. It was indeed the foreground rocks that lured me too : - )

Many Thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback Even though I have photographed this lighthouse on numerous occasions, it always offers new challenges in terms of composition.

Sincere Thanks for your interest and kind words.

The answer to your question is simple, I didn't use any software to stitch the image as it is only a single image, however I did use the perspective control and carelessly didn't erase the trace the adjustment. I noticed after I applied the frame and was too lazy to fix it at the time : - )

I did use "Nik Silver efex Pro- 2" software for the B & W conversion.

Best Regards

Always a treat to see what you've recently photographed.  This one is no exception.  I suspect that this offering, like some of your others, presents better in B&W than in colour, in your opinion at least.  No argument from me.  It's great!  Beautiful range of tones and a fine composition.  The foreground elements are very interesting and even provides some leading lines to your subject.  You've even managed to avoid a dead-center placement of it.  Those foreground rocks would themselves provide fodder for your lens.  Something to consider if you ever find you are having a dry spell (photographically speaking)  Excellent sky details as well.  What's not to like about it?  Merry Christmas!  Len.

Always good to hear from you! Thank you so much for your very kind words!

Yes, there wasn't a great deal of colour to play with, so I concentrated on textures and composition.

I agree the rocks (which are sandstone)  do have some lovely shapes and textures which would make a good subject in their own right.  And it's a great suggestion to consider photographing them when I'm experiencing a "dry spell".  Usually abstracts don't get very much consideration from me because I'm too busy looking at the "landscape" but I should try a few more abstracts, a bit of variation can't hurt : - )

Thanks again Len and a Very Merry Christmas to you!

Before I forget, I wish you and yours the very best this holiday season has to offer.  Speaking of forgetting, I'm constantly looking to see if you've posted any new wok.  Somehow this one got by me.

Without a doubt, one of the strongest elements in most of your photographs is the use of leading lines.  In this instance, the water-filled crevices between the rock formations direct a viewer immediately to the lighthouse.  Added bonuses are provided by the seawall, lighthouse, rocks, and shoreline.  There's plenty of detail to hold a viewer's interest, given all of the nuances in tone and texture.  And somehow the tones in the sky fit the scene perfectly.

My best always,

michael

It is always most gratifying to read your comments as you intuitively seem to be able to identify each and every aspect of the image I want to project.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Very Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Cheers Michael!

Alf,

Sorry I missed this earlier, I am just catching up.  Great range of tones, good choice to make this black & white.

I am enjoying my 'invitation' into this composition so much Alf. Your processing was a good choice. Good to see that you are still able to get out and take images and that you have not been 'flogged' with snow. The American Eastern coast is in State of Emergency re the storm that is hitting them now. Hopefully it will not affect us, but I still am concerned for so many of our members in these States.

Talk soon, Gail

It's very gratifying to read that you enjoyed viewing this photo!  And Thank You for your kind comments!

I have heard about the impending snow storm on the East Coast, it sounds quite frightening!

I was out last week in the Lake District and we had a mere powering of snow by comparison and that made it quite difficult to negotiate the mountain passes even in my 4WD car, so my thoughts and prayers will be with those on the East Coast!

Best Regards
