For sure an image that will always make one stop and think for a moment; it always hurts to see this text above the gate.

Maybe I am reading things extremely backwards, but I find the title you've chosen a bit awkward. Usually I don't care much for titles, but given the highly charged content of this image, the use of words as lies and fraud is very ambiguous. I assume you're referring to the text (as being a lie and fraudulent), but since the world still isn't free from those who believe that the holocaust was a real, the title could also be easily seen as an ultra right-wing statement.

Your observations are keen and well stated.  Clearly, you had no access to my thoughts when I chose the title.

The nazis wanted deportees to Auschwitz to think that they were sent to a work camp, when in fact only a few of them were actually slated for work details.  The camp's gate sign went hand in hand with this sort of sad propaganda.  In fact, most people shipped to Auschwitz died in the phony shower chambers, and the bodies were burned in the ovens.  There apparently is some dispute over the statistics.

Very strong photo! The composition and processing does transport the viewer back in history to the horrors of that era. As for the sign.."Work makes you free"..its one that will live in infamy as long as people remember. Great work!

Michael, for sure I did not want to imply you saw the "existence of the holocaust" as a deceit, I absolutely never got the idea you would have such ideas at all. I understand the kind of deceit you refer to, my comment was more a pondering on possible ambiguity that could exist with viewers.

Wouter, never could I entertain even a glimmer of an idea that you would side in any way with deniers.  I guess I chose my previous words poorly.

As for viewers having any questions about the title, they are welcome to ask me for clarification.  I always am happy to engage in dialogue.
