Giangiorgio Crisponi 475 Posted February 10, 2015 I like the background fan, the lights of the optical fibers recall to me the drops on the flower, ciao Giangiorgio Link to comment

michaellinder 16,612 Posted March 10, 2015 The flower with the droplets of water is expertly presented. However, I'm not crazy about the background. Link to comment
endof_days 0 Posted March 11, 2015 The front to back sharpness of the blossom has it feeling somewhat static, in fact the overall sharpness from front to back doesn't work for me. What is the focal point? Is it the background?, the bud? or the bloom? If the three elements had three differing degrees of sharpness the image would have some flow and depth. I like the angle of the flower and bud and their presentation, I do however find the crop bottom and right too tight. Nice job retaining the highlights one a white bloom. Link to comment
michaellinder 16,612 Posted March 11, 2015 EndofDays, if Radu had chosen a solid black background, for example, would you still have an issue with the crop? Link to comment
endof_days 0 Posted March 11, 2015 A solid black background would make the image flatter and even more static but would have no effect on my opinion of the crop. Link to comment
michaellinder 16,612 Posted March 11, 2015 Perhaps I'm just plain stupid, senile, blind or a combination thereof, but I really don't get the significance of the sharpness from front to back issue. The bloom is in clear focus and it's in the foreground. The two large petals on the sides of the bloom, and the petal in the middle behind the bloom also are in sharp focus. Granted the other two petals are less sharp, but I don't think this renders the overall image problematic. Link to comment
endof_days 0 Posted March 11, 2015 I'm sure you suffer from none of the above while I perhaps have been inarticulate, I'll try to elaborate. My feeling is that the image is too sharp from front to back not that it lacks sharpness. When one wants to give a photo a sense of depth the use of light and sharpness or depth of field are significant tools. If the image had been shot in such a way as to accent the depth, either by the lighting and/or by employing a narrower depth of field, the end result would, in my opinion, be an image with a greater sense of depth. As stands the photo looks flat to me. Link to comment
AJBart 9 Posted March 12, 2015 Wonderfully presented flower and bud. As for the background I think the photographer s intent here was to use a non traditional Bg to force the focus on the main subject. It almost seems to be pushing the flower to the viewer. At first I thought the same about the crop, but as I study it I'm ok with it. Well presented!!! AJ Link to comment
michaellinder 16,612 Posted March 12, 2015 Endof - I truly appreciate your response to my last set of comments. And I also appreciate your clarification. Fortunately I am familiar with DOF, but unfortunately less familiar with the roles of light and sharpness in creating a sense of depth. Link to comment
krpradu 125 Posted March 28, 2015 First I thank you all of you for opinions on this photo, all this will have all the time an only aspect to me:to go farther step by step to improve the work. This was just an experiment as AJ said to change the bg than usually have(black one especially) with optic fibers I had in the house.I had the idea to push the flower to viewer using this in this way.More space bottom and right would be good indeed. From all orchid flowers I had in portfolio I do not know why this was chosen, that in my opinion is somewhere in middle of my preferences.Michael,EndofDays,AJ,thank you for comments, wish all of you good light for more photos to be Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted March 29, 2015 Radu,I like the whole composition! I think that the contrast is adding a lot to the beautiful in/out flower . Link to comment
